Effect of a pulsating flow on hydrodynamics and fluid catalytic cracking chemical reaction in a circulating fluidized bed riser

Pilaiwan Chaiwang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (3D-CFD) of a pulsating flow applied to the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) reaction in the riser of a circulating fluidized bed reactor. By considering the operating parameters of pulsating flow, it was found that frequency and type of the waveform significantly affect the reactant conversion level and product yield percentages.

Particle shape effect on hydrodynamics and heat transfer in spouted bed: A CFD-DEM study

E. Dianyu et al.

Summary: By investigating the effects of particle shape on hydrodynamics and heat transfer in a spouted bed, this study found that prolate spheroids form the largest bubbles and rise the highest, while oblate spheroids exhibit better heat transfer performance. Compared to spherical particles, ellipsoidal spheroids have better mobility and heat transfer efficiency.

DEM investigation of strain behaviour and force chain evolution of gravel-sand mixtures subjected to cyclic loading

Zhihong Nie et al.

Summary: The study used discrete element method to simulate the cyclic loading of gravel-sand mixtures with low fines contents, finding that increasing fines content accelerated the development of strain but had little effect on contact forces evolution. Strong contacts tended to develop along loading boundary with spatial differences, while weak contacts were initially controlled by confining pressure and then by axial stress.

Influence of the pressure drop and the air lock on the solid flux in a cross-flow moving bed

Ruojin Wang et al.

Summary: The gas-solid flow pattern in a rectangular cross-flow moving bed is simulated using the MP-PIC model with the Barracuda software and verified by experimental data. The study found that the actual solid flux in the bed is influenced significantly by the air lock and pressure drop in the solid feed and discharge tubes, rather than solely by valve openings as traditionally believed. The pressure drops in these tubes are calculated using the CPPMO and CPP methods, with gas resistance dominating the pressure drop in the solid discharge tubes and gas frictional resistance determining the pressure drop in the solid feed tube.
