Nanocellulose in Emulsions and Heterogeneous Water-Based Polymer Systems: A Review

Stephanie A. Kedzior et al.

Summary: Nanocelluloses, including bacterial nanocellulose, cellulose nanocrystals, and cellulose nanofibrils, are cellulose-based materials with unique properties that can assemble at oil-water interfaces and provide new functionality to emulsion and latex systems. They offer unprecedented control as property modifiers for emulsion and polymer applications, influencing properties such as emulsion type, stability, and stimuli-responsive behavior. Nanocellulose can tune polymer particle properties and be used to produce capsules and polymer nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical, thermal, and adhesive properties.

Essential oils as additives in active food packaging

Shubham Sharma et al.

Summary: Food packaging acts as a passive barrier protecting food from environmental factors and extending shelf-life. Active packaging allows interaction between food and the environment, leading to longer shelf-life. Incorporating essential oils in active packaging helps maintain food quality and microbial control.

Characterization of chitosan film with cinnamon essential oil emulsion co-stabilized by ethyl-Nα-lauroyl-L-arginate hydrochloride and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin

Yaoyao Xu et al.

Summary: By incorporating cinnamon essential oil (CEO) nanoemulsion stabilized by ethyl-N-alpha-lauroyl-L-arginate hydrochloride (LAE) alone or co-stabilized by LAE and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD) into chitosan matrix, the antimicrobial properties and physical characteristics of the composite films were enhanced. The encapsulation and emulsification effect of HPCD and LAE on CEO helped improve the water barrier properties and mechanical strength of the chitosan films, suggesting potential for food packaging applications.

Pickering Emulsions via Interfacial Nanoparticle Complexation of Oppositely Charged Nanopolysaccharides

Siqi Huan et al.

Summary: By studying variables related to the adsorption of renewable nanoparticles and stabilization of multiphase systems, we prepared CNF/NCh aqueous suspensions using oppositely charged nanopolysaccharides and created sunflower oil-in-water Pickering emulsions with adjustable droplet diameters. The adsorption of CNF/NCh complexes at the oil/water interface led to highly stable emulsions with long-term stability against creaming and oiling-off, showcasing potential for foodstuff, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic formulations.

trans-Cinnamaldehyde-doped quadripartite biopolymeric films: Rheological behavior of film-forming solutions and biofunctional performance of films

Seyed Fakhreddin Hosseini et al.

Summary: Biofunctional quadripartite films were developed by incorporating trans-Cinnamaldehyde into chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol)/fish gelatin matrices. The addition of CIN increased tensile strength, reduced elongation-at-break, enhanced hydrophobicity, decreased water solubility and absorption. The films also showed antimicrobial activity, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and promising potential as inner functional packaging for food products.
