Performance of current ultrasound-based malignancy risk stratification systems for thyroid nodules in patients with follicular neoplasms

Yinghe Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ability of currently used ultrasound-based malignancy risk stratification systems in distinguishing follicular thyroid carcinoma from follicular thyroid adenoma and determining the indication for biopsy. The results showed limitations in accurately distinguishing follicular neoplasms and reducing unnecessary biopsies.

Artificial Intelligence for Thyroid Nodule Characterization: Where Are We Standing?

Salvatore Sorrenti et al.

Summary: This article provides an up-to-date summary of the current state and controversies surrounding the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) for characterizing thyroid nodules and cancer. While AI has potential benefits in improving diagnostic accuracy and reducing inter-observer variability, there is still ongoing debate about its real effectiveness compared to expert clinicians. Current evidence suggests that AI systems provide results comparable or slightly inferior to ultrasound specialists and radiologists. However, AI can be a valuable support tool, particularly in settings with limited expertise, and it may have potential for training purposes.

The ultrasound risk stratification systems for thyroid nodule have been evaluated against papillary carcinoma. A meta-analysis

Pierpaolo Trimboli et al.

Summary: Thyroid imaging reporting and data systems (TIRADS) are used to stratify the malignancy risk of thyroid nodules by ultrasound examination. This meta-analysis included 9 studies evaluating 19,494 nodules, finding an overall malignancy prevalence of 34% with 95% being PTC. Limited studies with possible selection bias were found, suggesting a need to revise TIRADS and consider other strategies to improve the diagnosis of FTC, MTC, and other malignancies.

Salvatore Sorrenti et al.

Summary: The new ultrasound technique CEUS is recommended for evaluating thyroid parenchyma and has shown potential utility in differentiating benign and malignant thyroid nodules, analyzing lymph node involvement, and guiding ablation procedures and monitoring treatment outcomes in thyroid pathology.

The Value of Sonography in Distinguishing Follicular Thyroid Carcinoma from Adenoma

Wen Li et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the sonographic features of follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) and differentiate it from follicular thyroid adenoma (FTA). Results showed that an interrupted halo and satellite nodule(s) with or without halo ring are specific sonographic features for FTC. Sonography could play a role in distinguishing FTC from FTA.

Stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1) knock down attenuates invasion and proliferation and enhances the expression of thyroid-specific proteins in human follicular thyroid cancer cells

Muhammad Yasir Asghar et al.

Summary: Research shows that STIM1 and ORAI1 are upregulated in thyroid cancer, and their knockdown can attenuate SOCE, reduce invasion and expression of promigratory factors, inhibit cell proliferation, and increase sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs.
