Reductions in sleep quality and circadian activity rhythmicity predict longitudinal changes in objective and subjective cognitive functioning in women treated for breast cancer

Sonia Ancoli-Israel et al.

Summary: Objective cognitive performance improved in women with breast cancer (WBC) from pre- to post-chemotherapy to one year later, while matched-controls showed consistent improvement throughout all time points. WBC reported significantly worse cognitive function compared to controls. Poorer neuropsychological functioning in WBC was predicted by inconsistent circadian activity rhythms, poor sleep quality, longer nap times, and cognitive complaints. Worse subjective cognition was predicted by lower sleep quality, higher fatigue, and depressed mood. Interventions targeting sleep, circadian rhythms, and fatigue may benefit cognitive function in WBC.

Salivary Melatonin Rhythm and Prostate Cancer: CAPLIFE Study

Macarena Lozano-Lorca et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the association between salivary melatonin rhythm and prostate cancer (PCa). The results showed that PCa patients had lower melatonin levels and smaller amplitude. High amplitude was associated with a decreased risk of PCa, while a late acrophase could potentially increase the risk of PCa.

Pathophysiological implications of neuroinflammation mediated HPA axis dysregulation in the prognosis of cancer and depression

Mir Hilal Ahmad et al.

Summary: Cancer patients are more prone to develop depressive symptoms due to inflammation caused by cancer and anticancer treatments, which dysregulates HPA-axis activity. Targeting the dysregulation of the HPA-axis in treatment may help alleviate depressive symptoms in cancer patients.

Clocks, cancer, and chronochemotherapy

Aziz Sancar et al.

Summary: The circadian clock plays a crucial role in regulating daily biological rhythms and its dysfunction may increase cancer risk. While some studies support a relationship between the clock and tumor development, current data is insufficient to conclude that clock disruption is generally carcinogenic. Further research should focus on specific interactions between clock components and carcinogenic mechanisms to fully understand the relationship between clocks and cancer.

Actigraphy-measured rest-activity circadian rhythm disruption in patients with advanced cancer: a scoping review

Ariesta Milanti et al.

Summary: Advanced cancer patients are more likely to have disrupted rest-activity circadian rhythms (RACR) compared to healthy individuals, which is associated with various physical and psychological symptoms. The disruption of RACR is also a predictor of quality of life and survival among these patients, highlighting the importance of interventions to restore disrupted RACR for better health outcomes.

Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of a Bright Light Intervention in Ovarian and Endometrial Cancer Survivors

Rina S. Fox et al.

Summary: This two-phase pilot study showed that bright light therapy is feasible and may be an effective non-pharmacological approach to reduce sleep disturbance and symptom burden in ovarian and endometrial cancer survivors. The study found improvements in sleep quality and depression in the group that received bright light therapy compared to dim light therapy, with effect sizes generally medium to large.
