An iron chelation-based combinatorial anticancer therapy comprising deferoxamine and a lactate excretion inhibitor inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells

Koichi Fujisawa et al.

Summary: The combination therapy of deferoxamine (DFO) and alpha-cyano-4-hydroxy cinnamate (CHC) was found to be effective in cancer cells, where treatment with DFO resulted in an increase in lactate levels. DFO-resistant cells exhibited metabolic changes and increased lactate production in response to DFO treatment. However, no synergistic effect was observed in human liver cancer cells.

Sustained Hematopoietic Engraftment Potential after Prolonged Storage of Cryopreserved Hematopoietic Stem Cells Used in Salvage Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation

Sarah S. Makhani et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the engraftment kinetics of long-term stored PBSCs in salvage transplantation, and the results show that the engraftment kinetics of PBSCs in salvage transplantation are comparable to those in the first transplantation. There is no association between the duration of storage and time to engraftment after controlling for other variables.

Effects of Smad4 on the expression of caspase-3 and Bcl-2 in human gingival fibroblasts cultured on 3D PLGA scaffolds induced by compressive force

Shuang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the effects of Smad4, caspase-3 and Bcl-2 on the proliferation of HGFs induced by compressive force. It was found that compressive force significantly increased cell proliferation and Bcl-2 expression while decreasing Smad4 and caspase-3 expression, with Smad4 potentially regulating compressive force-induced apoptosis in HGFs.

UV/ozone irradiation manipulates immune response for antibacterial activity and bone regeneration on titanium

Yuanyuan Yang et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the immune-modulatory properties of macrophages on UV/ozone-irradiated titanium, showing enhanced phagocytic and bactericidal activity against S. aureus. The combination of UV and ozone treatment created a favorable osteoimmune environment, preventing biomaterial-associated infections and promoting bone formation. This research suggests the therapeutic potential of UV/ozone irradiation in bone regeneration and infection prevention.

Ultraviolet light-emitting diode irradiation induces reactive oxygen species production and mitochondrial membrane potential reduction in HL-60 cells

Dong Xie et al.

Summary: UV LED irradiation at 280 nm induces ROS production and loss of MMP in HL-60 cells, leading to apoptosis, suggesting that enhanced ROS production and mitochondrial depolarization are important events in UV LED-induced apoptosis.
