Untethered selectively actuated microwave 4D printing through ferromagnetic PLA

Teck Yang Koh et al.

Summary: We propose a novel 4D printing technique that utilizes microwave radiation for non-contact actuation on thermal activated shape-shifting structures. By integrating dielectric materials into specific locations of a shape memory polymer (SMP) structure, we can achieve actuation of the 4D printed object using microwave radiation. This technique offers additional capabilities such as selective region heating, precise multi-step actuation, remote actuation, and reduced heating time.

Multimaterial direct 4D printing of high stiffness structures with large bending curvature

Chao Yuan et al.

Summary: The emerging direct four dimensional (4D) printing approach allows for the fabrication of complex 3D geometries from printed flat patterns, but faces challenges in achieving both large bending curvature and high loading capacity simultaneously. A multimaterial direct 4D printing method has been developed to address this issue, utilizing dehydration induced shrinkage and stiffening to create 3D structures with large bending curvature and high bending stiffness. This approach demonstrates advantages in terms of less building time and high load capacity compared to other 3D printing technologies.

4D Printing of Continuous Shape Representation

Sang-Joon Ahn et al.

Summary: A novel 4D printing strategy utilizing shape memory polymers to achieve continuous levels of shape-recovery strain is proposed. The irrecoverable state of the polymers and the corresponding recovery strain can be precisely controlled, allowing for translation into mathematical function representation to implement 4D-printed bilayer strain functions that match target geometry curvatures. This approach demonstrates the capability to produce 4D-printed architectures with continuously varying strain profiles of almost any function type, as shown by the example of 3D face masks with facial feature transformation.
