An assessment of the transport mechanism and intraneuronal stability of l-carnosine

Alexander Lopachev et al.

Summary: l-Carnosine is a well-known antioxidant and neuroprotector, which is taken up by neurons via active transport through the PEPT2 membrane transporter. Passive transport speed is slower than active transport speed, and high concentrations of carnosine can lead to a reversal in transport speed. The elimination rate of carnosine by neurons suggests that maintaining high concentrations in brain tissue or improving glial cell synthesis of carnosine may be necessary for its effective use as a neuroprotector.

Structural snapshots of human PepT1 and PepT2 reveal mechanistic insights into substrate and drug transport across epithelial membranes

Maxime Killer et al.

Summary: The uptake of peptides in mammals is crucial for nutrition and inflammatory diseases, which is mediated by transporters in solute carrier family 15. The structures of human PepT1 and PepT2 captured in different states provide insights into substrate recognition and conformational transitions during transport, supporting future drug design efforts to enhance bioavailability in the human body.
