Heme-oxygenase and lipid mediators in obesity and associated cardiometabolic diseases: Therapeutic implications

John A. McClung et al.

Summary: Obesity-mediated metabolic syndrome is the leading cause of death worldwide. The inducible form of heme oxygenase, HO-1, shows potential pharmacological effects in metabolic diseases and lipid metabolism. HO-1 reduces inflammation through its anti-inflammatory effects, increases vasodilation, and improves insulin and leptin sensitivity. Recent studies have found that HO-1, with the antioxidant effect of bilirubin, can increase the production of biologically active lipid metabolites. HO-1 and bilirubin are also considered potential therapeutic targets for fat-induced liver diseases.

Brown adipose tissue is associated with cardiometabolic health

Tobias Becher et al.

Summary: A retrospective analysis of over 50,000 patients' F-18-FDG PET/CT scans revealed that individuals with brown adipose tissue had lower odds of cardiometabolic conditions. The presence of brown adipose tissue was independently correlated with lower odds of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. The beneficial effects of brown adipose tissue were more pronounced in individuals with overweight or obesity, suggesting a potential role in mitigating the deleterious effects of obesity.
