Does lymph node ratio (metastasis/total lymph node count) affect survival and prognosis in gastric cancer?

Ramazan Topcu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of the metastatic lymph node/total lymph node ratio (N-ratio) on survival and prognosis in surgically treated gastric carcinomas. The results found that a N-ratio higher than 0.32 was associated with poorer survival and prognosis. Additionally, the N-ratio was also found to be useful in identifying patients with a higher risk of mortality.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Recent updates and current issues of sentinel node navigation surgery for early gastric cancer

Sung Gon Kim et al.

Summary: Sentinel node navigation surgery (SNNS) is considered an ideal surgical option for preserving most parts of the stomach and maintaining normal gastric function in early gastric cancer (EGC) patients. While previous studies have shown the safety and feasibility of SNNS in gastric cancer, issues related to technical standardization and oncological safety still need to be addressed. Ongoing studies are actively working on resolving these problems, and SNNS may become an important surgical option in the future treatment of gastric cancer.
