Summary: Compared to EWGSOP1, the prevalence of sarcopenia in older adults decreased when diagnosed according to EWGSOP2. Based on limited evidence, EWGSOP2 seems to be worse for predicting unfavorable outcomes compared with EWGSOP1.

Test-retest reliability data of functional performance, strength, peak torque and body composition assessments in two different age groups of Kosovan adults

Arben Boshnjaku et al.

Summary: This study reports the test-retest reliability data of laboratory-and field-based performance tests and body composition analyses of younger and older Kosovan adults. The results show that younger participants outperformed older participants in performance tests and body composition, with high reliability of the parameters observed in both age groups.

Precision and accuracy of bioelectrical impedance analysis devices in supine versus standing position with or without retractable handle in Caucasian subjects

Katrin Hamilton-James et al.

Summary: This study compared the precision and accuracy of BIA(std4), BIA(std8), and BIA(sup) in a Caucasian population. The results showed that all three devices were very precise, with BIA(std4) and BIA(std8) suitable for rapid body composition assessment in non-bedridden subjects. However, these three devices should not be used interchangeably.

Sarcopenia: prevalence, associated factors, and the risk of mortality and disability in Japanese older adults

Akihiko Kitamura et al.

Summary: This study found that Japanese older adults meeting Asian criteria for sarcopenia had increased risks of all-cause mortality and disability. Sarcopenia-related factors other than ageing included hypoalbuminaemia, cognitive impairment, low activity, and depressed mood. Individuals with sarcopenia had higher risks of mortality and incident disability, with different factors influencing men and women.

Summary: This study demonstrates the variability in sarcopenia prevalence estimates when different criteria are used. While population-specific criteria may be relevant for some populations, consensus is needed to determine the key deficits in skeletal muscle health for establishing an operational definition of sarcopenia.

Using the Updated EWGSOP2 Definition in Diagnosing Sarcopenia in Spanish Older Adults: Clinical Approach

Anna Arnal-Gomez et al.

Summary: The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) updated diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia, finding that different measurement and screening options lead to variations in the number of cases identified. The study demonstrated that the use of different measurement options results in differences in case identification within the studied population.

Summary: The European Working Group on Sarcopenia's proposed cut-off values for low grip strength resulted in lower prevalence rates of sarcopenia and frailty phenotype in older patients, potentially underestimating the prevalence in post-acute care hospital patients.

Sarcopenia and Menopause: The Role of Estradiol

Annalisa Geraci et al.

Summary: During aging and menopausal transition, women experience progressive muscle degeneration, leading to an increased risk of sarcopenia. Estradiol plays a crucial role in skeletal muscle function by stimulating satellite cell proliferation and limiting inflammatory stress damage. Estradiol Replacement Therapy, combined with nutrition and physical activity programs, can be a valuable tool in treating sarcopenia in women.

Association between Food Insecurity and Sarcopenia among Adults Aged ≥65 Years in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Lee Smith et al.

Summary: Limited literature has explored the relationship between food insecurity and sarcopenia in low- and middle-income countries, with this study finding that severe food insecurity is significantly associated with higher odds for sarcopenia among older adults in multiple LMICs. Addressing food insecurity in these settings may be an effective strategy to combat the high prevalence of sarcopenia.

Association between Polymorphisms in Vitamin D Pathway-Related Genes, Vitamin D Status, Muscle Mass and Function: A Systematic Review

Ermira Krasniqi et al.

Summary: The association between vitamin D level and muscle-related traits is influenced by genetic, environmental, and nutritional factors. This review systematically identifies the relationship between SNPs in vitamin D pathway-related genes with vitamin D levels and muscle traits in healthy adults. It provides valuable information for selecting candidate SNPs for further studies and personalized strategies in identifying individuals at risk for vitamin D deficiency.

Summary: The study on Kosovan adults shows that the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism may have a sex-specific impact on knee extensor peak torque and BMI. Female XX carriers exhibited taller height and higher isokinetic knee extension peak torque, while male XX carriers showed taller height and lower BMI compared to other groups.

Obesity paradox and aging

Ottavio Bosello et al.

Summary: Most studies supporting the existence of the obesity paradox have only evaluated BMI as an index of obesity, neglecting factors such as body composition, visceral adiposity, sarcopenic obesity, and cardio fitness. Many studies argue that central fat and loss of fat-free mass may be more crucial than BMI in determining health risks associated with obesity in older age.
