Factors Associated With the Incidence and Timing of Total Knee Arthroplasty Infection

Mark D. Hasenauer et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively examined the incidence and timing of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total knee arthroplasty. The majority of infections occurred within the first year after surgery. Male patients and those with major depression or anxiety were more likely to develop an infection within the first year, while patients with a history of cellulitis and those taking antiepileptic medications were more likely to develop an infection after the first year.

Mohd Aliff Ahmad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and risk of infection in diabetic and non-diabetic patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty. The results showed that the risk of infection was significantly higher in diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic patients. Deep surgical site infection was more common in diabetic patients.

Incidence and Risk Factors of 30-Day Surgical Site Infection after Primary Total Joint Arthroplasty in a Middle-Income Country: A Single-Center Experience

Vuk Marusic et al.

Summary: This study assessed the incidence and risk factors associated with 30-day surgical site infections following total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty. The incidence rate of SSIs after THA was 5.4% and after TKA was 4.8%. Independent risk factors for SSIs after THA included ASA score > 2, smoking, and peripheral vascular disease.

Acute surgical site infection after total knee arthroplasty in patients with rheumatoid arthritis versus osteoarthritis

Ho-Ken Chung et al.

Summary: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis do not have a higher risk of acute surgical site infection after total knee arthroplasty compared to patients with osteoarthritis. The current treatment strategy for rheumatoid arthritis patients requiring TKA is deemed safe and appropriate.

Phenome-wide association of 1809 phenotypes and COVID-19 disease progression in the Veterans Health Administration Million Veteran Program

Rebecca J. Song et al.

Summary: The study analyzed 648,202 participants from the Veteran Affairs Million Veteran Program and found that older age, higher BMI, male gender, and patients with a history of respiratory, kidney, bacterial, or metabolic comorbidities were more likely to experience severe COVID-19. Further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms of these associations.
