Preoperative Anxiety in the Surgical Transfer and Waiting Area: A Cross-Sectional Mixed Method Study

Mikhail Dziadzko et al.

Summary: Severe preoperative anxiety can have clinical consequences and worsen patient satisfaction. This study investigated the frequency and predictors of preoperative anxiety, as well as the effect of a surgical transfer and waiting area on anxiety levels. The results showed that female patients, inpatient settings, and pre-procedure pain were predictive factors for anxiety, while previous operating room experience and a supine arrival position were associated with lower anxiety levels. Patients complained about a lack of information and an uncomfortable environment in the waiting area, and suggested the use of warm blankets and music as well as additional sedative agents to reduce anxiety.

Regional versus general anesthesia for ambulatory total hip and knee arthroplasty

Jaime L. Baratta et al.

Summary: This review examines the impact of spinal versus general anesthesia on outcomes in outpatient total joint arthroplasty. The overall complication rates are low in this patient population, and there is some suggestion that spinal anesthesia may lead to better same-day discharge success. However, direct comparisons in prospective studies are lacking. Existing evidence suggests that both spinal and general anesthesia can lead to successful outcomes in ambulatory total joint arthroplasty.

New Technologies in Knee Arthroplasty: Current Concepts

Cecile Batailler et al.

Summary: Total knee arthroplasty is an effective treatment for severe osteoarthritis, but up to 20% of patients may remain dissatisfied. New technologies in TKA, such as patient-specific instruments, customized implants, sensors, accelerometers, and robotic-assisted systems, offer advantages but also limitations.

Spinal anaesthesia with Chloroprocaine HCl 1% for elective lower limb procedures of short duration: a prospective, randomised, observer-blind study in adult patients

Daniela Ghisi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of different doses of 1% chloroprocaine in lower extremity procedures, showing that the 30 mg dose had a significantly faster resolution of spinal block compared to the 40 mg and 50 mg doses, but it also resulted in a higher secondary failure rate.

Summary: In parturients undergoing elective lower segment caesarean section, the addition of fentanyl to intrathecal 1% 2-chloroprocaine can prolong the duration of sensory block and postoperative analgesia.
