Central-line-associated bloodstream infections, multi-drug-resistant bacteraemias and infection control interventions: a 6-year time-series analysis in a tertiary care hospital in Greece

A. Papanikolopoulou et al.

Summary: A study conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Greece found that hand hygiene was significantly associated with a reduction in the incidence of central-line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). Time-series analysis is an important tool for evaluating the effectiveness of infection control interventions.

Research paper Association between consumption of antibiotics, infection control interventions and Clostridioides difficile infections: Analysis of six-year time-series data in a tertiary-care hospital in Greece

Amalia Papanikolopoulou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), antibiotic use, and infection control interventions. The results showed a significant reduction in the rate of community-acquired CDI in the adult ICU during the implementation of an antibiotic stewardship program. The CDI rates remained stable in the rest of the hospital, and there was also a significant reduction in antibiotic consumption throughout the hospital.

Six-Year Time-Series Data on Multidrug-Resistant Bacteremia, Antibiotic Consumption, and Infection Control Interventions in a Hospital

Amalia Papanikolopoulou et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the use of disinfectant solutions for hand hygiene and the isolation rates of MDR carrier patients in the hospital can effectively control the incidence of MDR bacteremia.

Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia, Multidrug-Resistant Bacteremia and Infection Control Interventions in an Intensive Care Unit: Analysis of Six-Year Time-Series Data

Amalia Papanikolopoulou et al.

Summary: This hospital-based study investigated the association between ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) rate, incidence of bacteremia from multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, and infection control interventions in an ICU from 2013 to 2018. The study found that infection control interventions, such as isolating patients with MDR pathogens and using hand disinfectants, significantly contributed to the decrease in VAP rate.

Prevalence and Impact of Biofilms on Bloodstream and Urinary Tract Infections: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Henrique Pinto et al.

Summary: This study highlights the close relationship between biofilms and the resistance and virulence of BSI and UTI infections, especially the association of resistant strains with BSI persistence and mortality. The impact of biofilms on Candida BSI appears to be independent of clinical differences, including treatment interventions. In UTI, multi-drug resistant and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing strains of Escherichia coli are associated with higher prevalence of biofilm production.
