Nursing workload on the day of discharge from the intensive care unit is associated with readmission

Assessment of Nursing Workload as a Mortality Predictor in Intensive Care Units (ICU) Using the Nursing Activities Score (NAS) Scale

Georgia Fasoi et al.

Summary: The study did not demonstrate a significant correlation between nursing workload and mortality, but nursing workload appeared relatively higher for patients who died in the ICU, indicating a potential positive correlation between these two variables. Additionally, the nursing workload was found to be moderate, with one ICU nurse able to care for more than one patient.

A review of inpatient nursing workload measures

Stepney Racy et al.

Summary: This study compared measures of nursing workload in adult inpatient settings and identified 11 different workload measures. The researchers recommend careful assessment of the psychometric properties of nursing workload measures before using them in routine practice.

Factors associated with nursing workload in three intensive care units

Diana Isabel Caceres Rivera et al.

Summary: This study found that nursing staff in intensive care units spend approximately 70% of their time on a single patient, with administrative work taking up most of their time. Factors associated with high nursing workload include hospital stays of longer than 3 days, high APACHE II score, coming from the surgery department, and having a diagnosis of trauma and emergency.

Delay in ICU transfer is protective against ICU readmission in trauma patients: a naturally controlled experiment

Stephen E. Ranney et al.

Summary: Unplanned intensive care unit (ICU) readmission, known as ICU bounce back (ICUbb), is associated with worse outcomes. This study leveraged a natural experiment to determine that delayed transfer is protective against ICUbb. Despite higher age, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) score, and Injury Severity Score (ISS), patients in the Unintended-Delayed group experienced fewer ICUbb, with delayed transfer reducing ICUbb risk by 78% after controlling for age, CCI, and ISS.
