Structure and function of the hybrid cluster protein

Wilfred R. Hagen

Summary: A hybrid cluster (HC) is a 4Fe cluster with both sulfur and oxygen bridges, and it interacts with HC proteins. HC proteins are widely found in bacteria, archaea, and monocellular eukarya, and they possess nitrous oxide reductase activity and controversial signal transduction activity. HC undergoes complex structural changes and involves single-electron iron-based redox chemistry and electron-pair redox chemistry of a persulfidocysteine sulfur atom.

Linking transcriptional dynamics of CH4-cycling grassland soil microbiomes to seasonal gas fluxes

Jana Taeumer et al.

Summary: This study explores the seasonal dynamics of CH4-cycling soil microbiomes and their relationship with gas fluxes using quantitative metatranscriptomics. The results reveal that CH4 fluxes are highly dynamic, with the soils acting as net CH4 sources in autumn and winter and sinks in spring and summer. The abundance of methanogen mRNA correlates well with CH4 fluxes, while the ratio of methanotroph to methanogen mRNA is higher in spring and summer when the soils act as CH4 sinks.

Methylocystis silviterrae sp.nov., a high-affinity methanotrophic bacterium isolated from the boreal forest soil

Ekaterina N. Tikhonova et al.

Summary: A novel species of high-affinity methanotrophic bacteria, Methylocystis silviterrae sp. nov., was proposed based on the characteristics of strain FST isolated from forest soil in southern Moscow. FST utilizes only methane and methanol as carbon sources, grows at temperatures of 4-37 degrees C and pH of 4.5-7.5, and possesses genes for nitrogen fixation, polyhydroxybutyrate synthesis, antibiotic resistance, and detoxification of various substances.

Discrepancy in exchangeable and soluble ammonium-induced effects on aerobic methane oxidation: a microcosm study of a paddy soil

Hester van Dijk et al.

Summary: The effects of ammonium on soil methane oxidation are influenced by both the soluble ammonium concentration and the methanotrophic activity, with the soil enrichment method providing a more accurate representation of these effects. Additionally, Methylosarcina was found to be the predominant methanotroph at elevated ammonium levels, suggesting a potential role for this microorganism in methane oxidation under high ammonium conditions.
