Mitochondrial DNA copy number in human disease: the more the better?

Roberta Filograna et al.

Summary: During evolution, mitochondria have lost or transferred most genetic information to the nucleus, but they still retain their own genome. Mammalian mtDNA encodes 13 proteins, accounting for only 1% of the mitochondrial proteome. Mutations in mtDNA often affect only a fraction of the copies present in each cell.

Integration of IL-2 and IL-4 signals coordinates divergent regulatory T cell responses and drives therapeutic efficacy

Julie Y. Zhou et al.

Summary: Cells integrate concurrent signaling initiated by different cytokines to produce specific responses, and the combinatorial effects of different cytokines can lead to distinct biological outcomes, understanding this signaling pathway is crucial for addressing diseases.

A novel role for vaping in mitochondrial gene dysregulation and inflammation fundamental to disease development

Stella Tommasi et al.

Summary: Analyzing the whole transcriptome, the study found that current vapers, rather than past smokers, are significantly associated with gene dysregulation. Both vapers and smokers showed similar patterns in gene networks and pathways, with smokers exhibiting more pronounced transcriptomic changes. The dysregulation of mitochondrial genes and immune response genes in both groups, influenced by upstream cytokines, plays a crucial role in inflammation and disease development.

Single-cell profiling of tumor heterogeneity and the microenvironment in advanced non-small cell lung cancer

Fengying Wu et al.

Summary: This study utilized single-cell RNA sequencing to analyze 42 late-stage NSCLC patients, revealing significant heterogeneity in tumors in terms of cellular composition, chromosomal structure, developmental trajectory, and the identification of rare cell types. The research also highlighted the correlation between tumor heterogeneity and tumor-associated neutrophils.
