Aqueously altered igneous rocks sampled on the floor of Jezero crater, Mars

K. A. Farley et al.

Summary: The Perseverance rover has discovered water-altered igneous rocks in the Jezero crater on Mars and found evidence of brine evaporation in the core samples. These samples may be brought back to Earth for further research.

Froude supercritical flow processes and sedimentary structures: New insights from experiments with a wide range of grain sizes

Kenya Ono et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that supercritical-flow deposits with a wide range of grain sizes can have more complex sedimentary structures, and are not solely controlled by the Froude number. Surprisingly, it shows that supercritical flows can promote suspension transport of all grain sizes, including gravels. Comparison with outcrop datasets highlights the significant role of hydraulic jumps in producing lithologically and geometrically complex stratigraphy.

Bedforms and sedimentary structures related to supercritical flows in glacigenic settings

Joerg Lang et al.

Summary: Upper-flow-regime bedforms, such as upper-stage-plane beds, antidunes, chutes-and-pools, and cyclic steps, are commonly found in glacigenic depositional environments with abundant meltwater discharge and sediment supply. Important parameters for bedform evolution differ between different depositional environments, including flow confinement, bed slope, aggradation rate, and grain size. Differences in bedform architecture, preservation potential, and sediment characteristics are related to flow strength, settling rates, and bed roughness.

Sedimentary structure of inferred cyclic-step bedforms in submarine volcaniclastic slope deposits, Cuatro Calas, south-east Spain

Jan H. van den Berg et al.

Summary: This paper provides the first detailed description and interpretation of the sedimentary structures and depositional architecture of cyclic-step deposits formed on the submarine slope of an ancient volcano. With a novel method, a maximum cyclic step height and length have been calculated.

Lacustrine deltas and subaqueous fans: almost the same, but different-a review

Beata Gruszka et al.

Summary: Although deltas and subaqueous fans are formed in near-shore zones of basins, their hydraulic conditions, depositional mechanisms, and lithofacies characteristics differ. Subaqueous fans, which are relatively poorly understood and often overlooked in lacustrine sedimentological interpretations, exhibit significant paleoenvironmental and lithological differences compared to deltas.
