Investigations on the material flow and the influence of the resulting texture on the tensile properties of dissimilar friction stir welded ZK60/Mg-Al-Sn-Zn joints

Liangwen Xie et al.

Summary: This study focused on the relationship between material flow and texture evolution in friction stir welding of magnesium alloys, as well as the influence of texture on the tensile properties of joints. The results showed that the material flow velocity and texture intensity were influenced by the material arrangement and deformation behavior. Joints with ZK60 at the advancing side exhibited higher flow velocity and texture intensity, resulting in lower tensile strength. The fractures of both joints occurred at the interface between the stir zone and thermo-mechanical affected zone due to the inhomogeneous texture distribution.
