The Application of Regional Cerebral Oxygenation Monitoring in the Prediction of Cerebral Hypoperfusion During Carotid Endarterectomy

Bin Yu et al.

Summary: This study assessed the diagnostic ability of near-infrared spectroscopy-monitored regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO(2)) to detect cerebral hypoperfusion during carotid endarterectomy. The results showed that decreases in rSO(2) were correlated with decreases in evoked potentials (EPs). A relative reduction in rSO(2) >= 16% could serve as a warning sign for clamping-associated cerebral hypoperfusion.

Surgical treatment combining endoscopic third ventriculostomy and choroid plexus cauterization (ETV/CPC) at CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda (CCHU) is as effective as standard ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement while requiring fewer resources and less post-operative care. This study aims to monitor the progression of hydrocephalus, treatment response, and investigate the association between cerebral physiology, brain growth, and neurodevelopmental outcomes following surgery.

Effects of Systemic Physiology on Mapping Resting-State Networks Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Androu Abdalmalak et al.

Summary: Resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has gained popularity for its simplicity and potential for providing insights into brain disorders. Robert Luke et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of different analysis procedures on auditory responses in fNIRS, finding that both GLM and averaging analyses generated similar experimental conclusions, with short channel correction improving individual-level detection.

Superconducting nanowire single-photon sensing of cerebral blood flow

Nisan Ozana et al.

Summary: The ability of diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) to measure cerebral blood flow (CBF) in humans is limited by the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the method. To substantially improve SNR, a new DCS device operating at 1064 nm with superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPD) was built, showing a significant increase in photon detection and SNR gain compared to typical DCS systems. This improved system allows for clean pulsatile flow signal detection at a larger separation distance and demonstrates potential for more robust measures of non-invasive cerebral perfusion.

Cerebral Tissue Regional Oxygen Saturation as a Valuable Monitoring Parameter in Pediatric Patients Undergoing Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Song Chen et al.

Summary: Monitoring and analyzing cerebral tissue oxygen saturation in pediatric patients undergoing ECMO support revealed that survivors had higher CrSO2 levels, less time with CrSO2 <60%, and lower CrSO2 variability, which may be associated with PICU mortality.

The role of diffuse correlation spectroscopy and freuuency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy in monitoring cerebral hemodynamics during hypothermic circulatory arrests

Alexander Zavriyev et al.

Summary: Real-time noninvasive monitoring of cerebral blood flow (CBF) during surgery is crucial in reducing mortality rates associated with adult cardiac surgeries requiring hypothermic circulatory arrest (HCA). Monitoring using diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) in combination with frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (FDNIRS) can detect changes in CBFi, SO2, and CMRO2i, providing valuable insights for optimizing cerebral protection during HCA.

Comparison of Human Social Brain Activity During Eye-Contact With Another Human and a Humanoid Robot

Megan S. Kelley et al.

Summary: Robot design for simulating interpersonal social interaction is an active research field with various applications. Neural responses to eye-to-eye contact in human and human-robot interactions were compared, revealing increased neural activity in human social systems during human-human eye contact but not human-robot eye contact. This suggests that current human-robot eye contact methods may not fully engage the human brain in the same way as human-human interaction.
