Wintertime Submesoscale Offshore Events Overcoming Wind-Driven Onshore Currents in the East China Sea

Jiliang Xuan et al.

Summary: This study reveals the existence of unique wintertime offshore currents in the upper layer of the East China Sea, which are widespread in the 30-70-m isobath area and even overcome the wind-driven onshore currents at the 50-70-m isobaths. The mechanisms behind the generation of submesoscale offshore currents, such as mixed layer instabilities, frontogenesis and turbulent thermal wind, have a growth rate fast enough to compete with the wind-driven dynamics during relatively weak winter monsoons (<10 m/s).

Submesoscale Eddies in the South China Sea

Qinbiao Ni et al.

Summary: An automatic detection method for submesoscale eddies in the South China Sea is developed, revealing their characteristics of an average radius of about 13 km and an aspect ratio of 0.5, with a predominance of cyclones. Additionally, the unique cat's-eye pattern on the surface and the tendency for eddies to become more circular with increasing radius are observed. Submesoscale eddies strongly regulate surface chlorophyll through horizontal advection, while having less coherent signatures in sea surface temperature.

Seasonal Modulation of Submesoscale Kinetic Energy in the Upper Ocean of the Northeastern South China Sea

Jinchao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates for the first time the seasonal modulation of submesoscale kinetic energy in the northeastern South China Sea using data from a single mooring. The submesoscale kinetic energy shows an asymmetric annual cycle modulated by mixed-layer depth and mesoscale strain rate, and the inverse KE cascade may play a crucial role in modulating mesoscale KE temporal variation in winter.
