Influence of Early Low-Temperature and Later High-Temperature Diagenesis on Magnetic Mineral Assemblages in Marine Sediments From the Nankai Trough

Myriam Kars et al.

Summary: Diagenesis can significantly alter primary magnetic mineral assemblages, as observed in the sediments drilled at International Ocean Discovery Program Site C0023. Varying conditions over time have led to a complex sequence of magnetic overprints, influenced by factors such as sediment supply, burial temperature, and tectonic fluid circulation.

Fluid Accumulation, Migration and Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane Along a Major Splay Fault at the Hikurangi Subduction Margin (New Zealand): A Magnetic Approach

Annika Greve et al.

Summary: Understanding the locus of fluid flow along thrust and splay faults is crucial for comprehending the hydraulic properties of accretionary systems and fault mechanics. In this study, rock magnetic techniques were used to identify enhanced magnetic mineral alteration within the Papaku fault, revealing changes within the main brittle fault zones and subsidiary fault zones. The secondary magnetic mineral diagenesis was likely driven by anaerobic methane oxidation, with sediments acting as a barrier to prevent upward fluid flow through the fault zone.

Polycrystalline texture causes magnetic instability in greigite

Barbara Lesniak et al.

Summary: The magnetic stability of synthetic, polycrystalline greigite flakes is influenced by textural effects caused by inter-grown nano-sized crystallites. These effects result in modifiable coherent magnetization volume configurations, which can be reset by stronger magnetic fields. This finding demonstrates a new magnetic manipulation trait of polycrystalline greigite and opens the door for a more rigorous magnetic assessment and interpretation of polycrystalline nano-materials.

Greigite as an Indicator for Salinity and Sedimentation Rate Change: Evidence From the Yangtze River Delta, China

Yinglu Chen et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the formation mechanisms of ferrimagnetic greigite in Holocene Yangtze River Delta deposits, revealing that greigite-bearing layers are primarily found in accreting tidal flat facies during sea level transgression. The sedimentary intervals with higher TS content and lower Sr/Ba ratios suggest the accumulation of greigite under reducing estuarine and shallow marine conditions. The results provide valuable insights into the heterogeneity of depositional processes in Holocene delta environments and demonstrate the potential of using magnetic detection of greigite for inferring salinity and sedimentation rate changes.

Authigenic Greigite as an Indicator of Methane Diffusion in Gas Hydrate-Bearing Sediments of the Hikurangi Margin, New Zealand

Myriam Kars et al.

Summary: Authigenic ferrimagnetic iron sulfides, particularly greigite, are commonly found in gas hydrate-bearing marine sediments of active accretionary prisms. This study at Site U1518 aims to document rock magnetic properties and magnetic mineral composition, revealing high remanent coercivity and single-domain greigite patterns in most samples. The widespread distribution of greigite at this site is associated with methane diffusion and methane hydrate, with enhanced microbial activity likely favoring the formation and preservation of greigite in certain intervals. The close linkage between greigite, methane hydrate, and microbial activity is highlighted at the Hikurangi Margin.

Decadal Geomagnetic Secular Variations From Greigite Bearing Dead Sea Sediments

Yael Ebert et al.

Summary: Archaeomagnetic data from the Levant has revealed periods of fast and extreme changes in the geomagnetic field during the Holocene. By investigating outcrops from the late Holocene Dead Sea, researchers have discovered new information about variations in geomagnetic field direction, particularly associated with the Levantine Iron Age geomagnetic anomaly.
