The Curiosity Rover's Exploration of Glen Torridon, Gale Crater, Mars: An Overview of the Campaign and Scientific Results

Kristen A. Bennett et al.

Summary: The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity explored the clay mineral-bearing Glen Torridon region from January 2019 to January 2021, including a short campaign on the Greenheugh pediment. Curiosity roved 5 km in total, collected samples from 11 drill holes, and conducted the first Martian organics detection experiment. The Glen Torridon region hosts abundant phyllosilicates and exhibits a great diversity and abundance of sulfur-bearing organic molecules.

A mineralogical study of glacial flour from Three Sisters, Oregon: An for a cold and Mars

E. B. Rampe et al.

Summary: Geomorphic and mineralogical data suggest that liquid water was present on the martian surface and subsurface ~ 3.5 to 4 billion years ago. However, it is still unclear whether early Mars had a warm and wet climate or a cold and icy climate. This study examines the mineral compositions of glacial flour from Collier Glacier valley to investigate the mineralogical characteristics of mafic sediments altered under cold, wet conditions. The results show that X-ray amorphous materials were produced through chemical weathering on a cold and icy early Mars, but there was no significant formation of crystalline secondary phases such as phyllosilicates. This suggests that the phyllosilicates observed on Mars did not form in a cold and wet climate.

Bedrock Geochemistry and Alteration History of the Clay-Bearing Glen Torridon Region of Gale Crater, Mars

Erwin Dehouck et al.

Summary: Glen Torridon is a topographic trough on Mars with relatively strong spectral signatures of clay minerals. The Curiosity rover explored the area for over 700 Martian days to understand the geologic context of clay mineral formation and determine the intensity of aqueous alteration. Analysis of the bedrock's major-element geochemistry reveals distinct chemical compositions and mineralogical interpretations. Overall, the alteration in Glen Torridon shows elevated Chemical Index of Alteration values, suggesting the formation of clay minerals through open-system weathering.

Evidence for Fluctuating Wind in Shaping an Ancient Martian Dune Field: The Stimson Formation at the Greenheugh Pediment, Gale Crater

Steven G. Banham et al.

Summary: Temporal fluctuations of wind can impact the morphology and orientation of aeolian bedforms, leading to variations in aeolian deposits. The study of these deposits can provide valuable information about ancient atmospheric processes on Mars and Earth, including changes in atmospheric circulation, responses to global changes, and differences between ancient and modern processes. The observation of wind fluctuations across different temporal scales in the Stimson formation at Gale crater further enhances our understanding of atmospheric conditions and processes on Mars at a high temporal resolution.

Evolved Gas Analyses of Sedimentary Rocks From the Glen Torridon Clay-Bearing Unit, Gale Crater, Mars: Results From the Mars Science Laboratory Sample Analysis at Mars Instrument Suite

A. C. McAdam et al.

Summary: Evolved gas analysis data from the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite confirmed the presence of Fe-rich smectite, carbonate, oxidized organics, Fe/Mg sulfate, and chloride in sedimentary rocks from the Glen Torridon region of Gale crater on Mars. The mineralogy and chemistry data suggest that the environmental history of the region involved alteration with fluids of variable redox potential, chemistry and pH under a range of fluid-to-rock ratio conditions. This indicates the past habitability of the GT region and the availability of carbon for potential microbial life, although the lack of significant nitrogen may have limited microbial habitability.

Unravelling surface and subsurface carbon sinks within the early Martian crust

Summary: Understanding the climate history of Mars is crucial for understanding the environmental evolution of Earth and other rocky planets. The lack of carbonate minerals in the Martian surface suggests potential low pCO(2) conditions during the Noachian era, affecting the distribution of carbonates. Further investigation into carbonate-forming processes within the ancient Martian crust is needed to test hypotheses regarding the composition and atmosphere of early Mars.
