A cryptic variation in a member of the Ovate Family Proteins is underlying the melon fruit shape QTL fsqs8.1

Cecilia Martinez-Martinez et al.

Summary: The gene underlying the melon fruit shape QTL fsqs8.1 belongs to the Ovate Family Proteins, and changes in gene expression likely due to a cryptic structural variation at this locus lead to variation in fruit morphology. The round fruit shape induced by the CALC allele at the early ovary development stage is a result of this variation, which is responsible for transgressive segregation in fruit shape.

Pepper Fruit Elongation Is Controlled by Capsicum annuum Ovate Family Protein 20

Yelena Borovsky et al.

Summary: Fruit shape is a crucial quality trait in peppers, and a major QTL on chromosome 10, named fs10, controlling fruit shape has been identified. The candidate gene CaOFP20 has been found to function as a suppressor of fruit elongation in peppers, affecting cell expansion and replication.

Genome-wide identification of ovate family in Citrus and functional characterization of CitOFP19

Qingjiang Wu et al.

Summary: This study identified 16 OVATE family protein (OFP) genes in the pummelo genome and characterized the function of CitOFP19. It was found that CitOFP19 had significantly higher expression in the ovaries of round pummelo and overexpression of CitOFP19 in tomato resulted in pear-shaped fruit. This study provides insights into the genetic basis of fruit shape in citrus.

Genome-wide identification and characterization of the OFP gene family in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis)

Ruihua Wang et al.

Summary: Ovate family proteins (OFPs) are plant-specific transcription factors involved in regulating plant growth and development. A study on Brassica rapa identified 29 OFP genes unevenly distributed on different chromosomes, with potential intron gain events. Whole genome duplication likely contributed to the expansion of the OFP gene family, with significant changes in the expression levels of these genes observed in hybrids, possibly contributing to heterosis formation. Paralogous genes displayed different expression patterns among hybrids and their parents, providing a theoretical basis for further analysis of OFP gene functions in Brassica species.

OVATE Family Protein PpOFP1 Physically Interacts With PpZFHD1 and Confers Salt Tolerance to Tomato and Yeast

Qiuping Tan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the peach PpOFP1 gene physically interacts with the PpZFHD1 protein, enhancing salt tolerance in tomato and yeast. This discovery points to a novel mechanism for regulating salt tolerance in peach and other perennial deciduous trees.
