Promising therapeutic targets of endometriosis obtained from microRNA studies

Kaei Nasu et al.

Summary: Endometriosis, affecting 6-10% of women of reproductive age, involves aberrant microRNA (miRNA) expressions in its pathogenesis, regulating specific characteristics in endometriotic cells and targeting downstream molecules. Imbalance between tumorigenic and tumoristatic miRNAs may determine the progression of the disease and the response to treatment. Further exploration of endometriosis-associated miRNAs could provide insights into the pathogenesis and novel therapeutic development.

Endometrial stromal cell ferroptosis promotes angiogenesis in endometriosis

Guojing Li et al.

Summary: Endometriosis, a chronic disorder characterized by abnormal distribution of tissue, can cause iron overload and oxidative stress. The study found that ferroptosis of endometrial stromal cells can trigger the secretion of cytokines, promoting angiogenesis in adjacent lesions. VEGFA and IL8, important angiogenic factors, are upregulated in ectopic lesions. These findings provide a rationale for clinical practice and drug development for endometriosis.

Differential Expression of Tissular miRNA-155 in Pediatric Gastritis

Sasaran Maria Oana et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the differential expression of miR-155 in relation to pediatric gastritis. The results showed that miR-155 expression was increased in patients with gastritis but did not significantly differ from controls. The authors concluded that pediatric gastritis increases miR-155 expression, but this does not greatly impact its prognostic role.

Ferroptosis as a novel form of regulated cell death: Implications in the pathogenesis, oncometabolism and treatment of human cancer

Feifei Pu et al.

Summary: The treatment of cancer involves surgical excision, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Chemotherapy drugs interfere with tumor growth and induce cancer cell death. Ferroptosis, a newly discovered iron-dependent type of cell death, is negatively correlated with cancer development and primarily caused by an abnormal increase in iron-dependent reactive oxygen species and the imbalance of redox homeostasis.

The role of hypoxia in the development and progression of endometriosis

Wan-Ning Li et al.

Summary: Endometriosis is a benign gynecological disease affecting approximately 10% of women of reproductive age, leading to symptoms such as dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and infertility. Hypoxia plays a critical role in the disease phenotypes of endometriosis, influencing factors such as adhesion ability, estrogen biosynthesis, proinflammatory cytokines, angiogenic ability, and immune functions. Targeting HIF and downstream effectors may offer potential therapeutic options for endometriosis treatment.

Summary: Hypoxia plays a crucial role in the tumor microenvironment, correlating with tumor metastasis and prognosis. HIF-1α, a key molecule, is involved in multiple crucial steps in the metastatic cascade. Currently, researchers are focusing on potential pharmacological interventions and developing HIF-1 inhibitors to block tumor metastasis.

CD9, a tetraspanin target for cancer therapy?

Aurelio Lorico et al.

Summary: In this review, the history of CD9 involvement in oncogenesis and cancer metastasis is briefly discussed, highlighting its potential value as a tumor-associated antigenic target. CD9 has been identified as a favorable prognostic marker or predictor of metastatic potential depending on the cancer type. Besides its use as an antigenic biomarker, CD9 plays a role in intercellular communication under physiological and pathological conditions, notably in the establishment of cancer metastases.
