Heat-induced self-assembling of BSA at the isoelectric point

Lucia Comez et al.

Summary: Materials based on ordered protein aggregates have shown potential as drug carriers due to their biocompatibility and ability to sequester biological fluids. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) is a good candidate for this application, and its aggregation under acidic conditions has been studied using spectroscopic techniques. The study revealed differences in aggregation-prone species, secondary structure distribution, and aggregate types between millimolar and micromolar BSA solutions. Using the Maximum Entropy Method, the distribution of kinetic constants during the complex aggregation process was investigated, showing that the activation energy for forming aggregates is driven by the same interactions.

Probing the structural features and the micro-heterogeneity of various deep eutectic solvents and their water dilutions by the photophysical behaviour of two fluorophores

Matteo Tiecco et al.

Summary: This study investigated and characterized the structural features of a series of diverse Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) using two fluorescent probes, providing insights into their polarity, viscosity, hydrogen-bond network, and micro-heterogeneity. The effect of adding water to tune the properties of these systems was tested, with analysis of excited state dynamics and fluorescence decay kinetics revealing differences between the DESs. The findings suggest that the addition of water can lead to reduced viscosity and enhanced micro-heterogeneity in the DESs.
