Recent advances and mechanistic insights on the production of biomass-derived 2,5-bis(alkoxymethyl)furans

Among these fuels, 2,5-bis(alkoxymethyl)furans (BAMFs) produced from BHMF, HMF, or fructose are particularly attractive and can be used as biodiesel candidates or diesel additives. This review comprehensively summarizes the different production methods of BAMFs and their achievements, analyzes the functions of catalysts in various reactions, and provides ideas for future studies.

Renewable bio-based routes to γ-valerolactone in the presence of hafnium nanocrystalline or hierarchical microcrystalline zeotype catalysts

Synergy in Sn-Mn oxide boosting the hydrogenation catalysis of supported Pt nanoparticles for selective conversion of levulinic acid

?-Valerolactone synthesis from ?-angelica lactone and levulinic acid over biobased multifunctional nanohybrid catalysts

Summary: The selective conversion of biomass components to useful bioproducts using heterogeneous catalysts has potential to contribute to a renewable resource-based economy. In this study, carbohydrate biomass derived alpha-angelica lactone and levulinic acid were successfully converted to gamma-valerolactone using nanohybrid catalysts synthesized from bio-based furandicarboxylic acid and metal precursors. The nanohybrid catalysts showed superior performance compared to a microcrystalline metal-organic framework, with the Hf-FDCA catalysts being the most stable and efficient. Mechanistic studies provided insights into the multifunctional behavior of the hybrid catalysts during the conversion process.

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone over an acids-base trifunctional Hf-bagasse coordination complex derived catalyst

Recent Advances in Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation with Formic Acid over Heterogeneous Transition Metal Catalysts

Summary: Transition-metal-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation using formic acid as an in situ hydrogen donor has gained significant attention for its efficiency, atom economy, and sustainability compared to traditional high-pressure hydrogen processes. This review summarizes recent progress in heterogeneous hydrogen transfer from formic acid for catalytic transformations of biomass-derived chemicals, nitrogen-containing compounds, and organochlorinated compounds. The article also highlights the synthesis strategies of heterogeneous metal catalysts and optimization of reaction conditions to enhance catalytic activity and regulate product distribution, as well as structure-activity relationships and mechanistic interpretations of formic acid-mediated transfer hydrogenation. Discussion on current challenges and future outlook for the field is also presented.

Zinc-iron magnetic nanocatalyst supported on activated carbon was used for the selective hydrogenation, and commercial Bronsted acid catalysts were used for the etherification. The catalyst showed good recyclability without significant loss of catalytic activity.

Summary: The transformation of levulinic acid to gamma valerolactone using H3PW12O40@Zr-based metal-organic framework (HPW@MOF808) as a catalyst shows improved yield with an increase in HPW loading, as indicated by experimental results. The synergistic effect between Lewis acidic Zr49 sites in MOF-808 and BrOnsted acidic HPW sites contribute to the excellent catalytic performance, as proposed by a plausible reaction mechanism. Additionally, HPW@MOF-808 demonstrates resistance to leaching and can be reused for multiple cycles without significant loss of catalytic activity.
