Variation of the winter mid-latitude Westerlies in the Northern Hemisphere during the Holocene revealed by aeolian deposits in the southern Tibetan Plateau

Fuyuan Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a high-altitude aeolian sedimentary sequence from the southern Tibetan Plateau was used to reveal the variations in the winter mid-latitude Westerlies (MLW) during the Holocene. The analysis showed that the winter MLW was weaker during the Early to Middle Holocene, and stronger during the Middle to Late Holocene. These variations were closely related to the insolation/temperature/pressure gradient between low and high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere.

Pollen Data as a Temperature Indicator in the Late Holocene: A Review of Results on Regional, Continental and Global Scales

Zhiguo Rao et al.

Summary: The temperature history of the Holocene is debated due to the unreliable nature of pollen records, mainly caused by human impacts on terrestrial vegetation. Therefore, it is important to consider the possible human impacts on terrestrial Holocene temperature records and use proxies that are insensitive to human impacts for late Holocene climatic reconstruction.

Role of Indian Summer Monsoon and Westerlies on glacier variability in the Himalaya and East Africa during Late Quaternary: Review and new data

Om Kumar et al.

Summary: This paper reviews Late Quaternary climatic changes and glacier variability in the Himalaya and East Africa, focusing on the role of Indian Summer Monsoon, East African monsoon, and Westerlies monsoons. The study suggests that the Westerlies monsoon significantly contributed to the Northwestern Himalaya, while the ISM controlled glacier fluctuations in the Western Himalaya during the Late Quaternary.

East-west asymmetry in the distribution of rainfall in the Chinese Loess Plateau during the Holocene

Duo Wu et al.

Summary: Research on the Loess Plateau in China shows that precipitation varied significantly across the region during the Holocene period. Low precipitation characterized the early Holocene, while the middle to late Holocene saw an increase in precipitation due to an enhanced East Asian summer monsoon. The eastern region of the plateau became dry after 3,000 years ago, while the western region remained relatively wet during the same period, showing an asymmetry in rainfall patterns.

Holocene moisture evolution and its response to atmospheric circulation recorded by aeolian deposits in the southern Tibetan Plateau

Junhuai Yang et al.

Summary: This study presents an analysis of an aeolian sedimentary sequence from the Yarlung Zangbo River valley in the southern Tibetan Plateau, revealing that the Holocene moisture conditions were mainly influenced by changes in summer and winter insolation at 30°N, as well as by the Indian summer monsoon and the winter mid-latitude Westerlies.

Evolution of Near-Surface Wind Strength in Northeastern Arid Central Asia During the Holocene

Fuyuan Gao et al.

Summary: Wind dynamics in dust source areas are influenced by climate change, with stronger near-surface winds and Siberian high-pressure systems occurring during the early to middle Holocene and then gradually weakening in response to rising temperatures. This change is likely related to factors such as lower winter insolation, lower atmospheric CO2 content, and remnant high-latitude continental ice-sheets during the early to middle Holocene.

Preface (volume I): Quaternary paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental changes in Central Asia

Yougui Song et al.

Summary: The review summarizes the evolution of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment in Central Asia since the late Pliocene, indicating a long-term drying or desertification trend with at least one major drying event occurring around 0.5-0.6 million years ago. Despite an overall drying trend, the Holocene has been characterized by persistent wet conditions.

No evidence for an anti-phased Holocene moisture regime in mountains and basins in Central Asian: Records from Ili loess, Xinjiang

Jia Jia et al.

Summary: This study reveals a consistent wetting trend throughout the Holocene in arid Central Asia, based on analysis of two loess sections from Tienshan Mountain slope and two additional loess records from the intermontane arid basin. This finding contradicts the hypothesis of an anti-phased pattern of moisture/precipitation change between the humid mountains and the arid basins in the region.

Aeolian dust dynamics in the Fergana Valley, Central Asia, since ∼30 ka inferred from loess deposits

Yue Li et al.

Summary: Knowledge of the interactions among atmospheric dynamics, dust emissions and climate system in Central Asia is essential to understand the physical mechanisms for the dust lifecycle. The study investigates the granulometric and magnetic properties of a loess section in the Fergana Valley, providing a record of atmospheric dust dynamics. The results show precession forcing influences wind-regime variabilities in CA, with different processes before and after 15 ka under the impact of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheet.
