The evolutionary pathways for local adaptation in mountain hares

Iwona Giska et al.

Summary: Understanding local adaptations in mountain hares is crucial for evolutionary biology and conservation, and combining RAD sequencing with whole-genome sequencing revealed genetic signatures of local adaptation in different geographical areas. Candidate genes associated with environment-related traits were identified, showing the importance of adaptive variation in shaping the post-glacial dynamics of species.

The Legacy of Recurrent Introgression during the Radiation of Hares

Mafalda S. Ferreira et al.

Summary: The study on hares reveals high levels of allele sharing among species, reflecting extensive incomplete lineage sorting and temporally layered hybridization. Ancient hybridization has played a significant role throughout the radiation of hares, resulting in shared genetic variation that may contribute to adaptation in highly seasonal environments.

Hunting harvest data in Sweden indicate precipitous decline in the native mountain hare subspecies Lepus timidus sylvaticus (heath hare)

C. -G. Thulin et al.

Summary: The European brown hare appears to outcompete the mountain hare, particularly in southern Sweden where the heath hare subspecies of the mountain hare is facing a declining trend. A decline in hunting harvest of both hare species was observed throughout Sweden, suggesting a potential risk of extinction for the unique heath hare subspecies. Adaptive management strategies, such as establishing 'reservoir islands' and supplementary translocation of heath hare, along with educational outreach programmes, are recommended for heath hare conservation.

Hybridization with mountain hares increases the functional allelic repertoire in brown hares

Jaakko L. O. Pohjoismaki et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the ancestral genetic diversity of Finnish brown hares is small, while gene flow from mountain hares provides an important source of functional genetic variability. Some genetic variations may offer adaptive advantage for brown hares, while immunity-related genes are reciprocally exchanged and maintained through balancing selection.
