Alterations of nitric oxide homeostasis as trigger of intestinal barrier dysfunction in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Anja Baumann et al.

Summary: Changes in intestinal nitric oxide metabolism contribute to the development of intestinal barrier dysfunction in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In a mouse model of NAFLD, impaired intestinal barrier function, increased nitric oxide levels, and loss of arginase activity in the small intestine were observed. Supplementation with L-arginine improved intestinal barrier function and reduced nitric oxide production. Similar findings were observed in patients with NAFLD.

Citrulline supplementation attenuates the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in female mice through mechanisms involving intestinal arginase

Dragana Rajcic et al.

Summary: The study found that the nonproteogenic amino acid L-citrulline (L-Cit) can attenuate the progression of pre-existing diet-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and this protective effect is related to a decrease in bacterial endotoxin translocation, loss of tight junction proteins, and reduction in arginase activity in small intestinal tissue.

Microbiota profiling in aging-associated inflammation and liver degeneration

Anja Baumann et al.

Summary: Although there were no consistent and robust changes in microbiota composition in the small and/or large intestine of mice of different ages, the data suggest that alterations in markers of intestinal barrier function in the small intestine are associated with an induction of several Tlrs and the onset of hepatic inflammation in older mice, which increases with age.

Summary: The study showed that markers of liver damage and intestinal barrier function improved significantly in ALD patients after one week of alcohol withdrawal, although not reaching the level of controls.
