Improving Allergy Documentation: A Retrospective Electronic Health Record System-Wide Patient Safety Initiative

Lily Li et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to improve the documentation of allergies in the electronic health record (EHR) by reducing free-text entries. Through a multidisciplinary intervention, a total of 131,784 free-text entries were remediated, resulting in improved clinical decision support and patient safety.

Reconciling Allergy Information in the Electronic Health Record After a Drug Challenge Using Natural Language Processing

Ying-Chih Lo et al.

Summary: This study utilized natural language processing (NLP) to identify discrepancies between drug challenge test results and the electronic health record (EHR) allergy list. The combination of NLP and flowsheets proved to be an effective method for detecting discrepancies. The findings suggest that this NLP-based tool can enhance drug allergy assessments and improve patient safety.

Drug Allergy Labels Lost in Translation: From Patient to Charts and Backwards

Allison Ramsey et al.

Summary: The current methods of defining, reporting, assessing, labeling, delabeling, and reconciling adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and immunologically mediated drug hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) in electronic health records (EHRs) are inadequate and need improvement to enhance patient care quality and safety. Encouraging improved clinical documentation and demanding technological upgrades can help advance patient safety efforts by improving EHR documentation and communication. Telehealth methods have proven valuable in evaluating ADRs and HSRs, particularly in penicillin allergy evaluation and delabeling, showing potential for technological advancements in improving patient safety.

Urticaria: The 1-1-1 Criterion for Optimized Risk Stratification in β-Lactam Allergy Delabeling

Vito Sabato et al.

Summary: This study focused on the importance of urticaria characteristics in risk stratification for delabeling patients with a spurious beta-lactam allergy. The results showed that patients with urticaria appearing within 1 hour after the first dose and regressing within 1 day were more likely to have a positive allergy workup. The 1-1-1 urticaria criterion demonstrated high sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value, and positive predictive value for identifying patients at high risk.

Factors Associated with Self-Reported Drug Allergies in a Large Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria Cohort

Christine Rauscher et al.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of drug allergy in CSU patients was higher than the general population, with drug-allergic CSU patients being older, having a higher proportion of whites, and higher BMI. Additionally, multiple drug allergy was more common in female, white, older age, and those with co-existing asthma.
