Linking urbanization and air quality together: A review and a perspective on the future sustainable urban development

Xiaoyan Zhang et al.

Summary: Urbanization, along with industrialization and economic development, has had a profound impact on human society and its living environment. Air quality, as one of the most noticeable environmental factors, is currently a significant issue in urban areas of many low- and mid-income countries. This review examines the history of air pollution during various stages of urbanization in different income countries and provides a general understanding of the relationship between urbanization and air pollution. It suggests the development of preventive measures against environmental pollution during the process of urbanization in order to achieve sustainable urbanization with favorable air quality.

Exploring the pattern of use and accessibility of urban green spaces: evidence from a coastal desert megacity in Saudi Arabia

Abdullah Addas

Summary: This study assessed the use and accessibility of five urban parks in the Jeddah megacity of Saudi Arabia. The findings showed that urban parks are mainly used for spending time with relatives and friends, and there are seasonal variations in park visits. Socio-demographic attributes have a significant impact on park usage, and there are discrepancies between importance and performance of urban management strategies.

A Novel Composite Index to Measure Environmental Benefits in Urban Land Use Optimization Problems

Md Mostafizur Rahman et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify indicators of environmental benefits and propose a novel composite index to measure such benefits in urban land use optimization problems. The research findings show that land surface temperature is the most influential indicator, while carbon storage is the least important factor. The study also demonstrates the potential of using the proposed index in land use allocation to ensure environmental benefits.

A comparative analysis of different pixel and object-based classification algorithms using multi-source high spatial resolution satellite data for LULC mapping

Akanksha Balha et al.

Summary: The study compared the relative effectiveness of nine different pixel- and object-based classification algorithms in generating remotely sensed LULC maps, with random forest and object-based classification identified as potential classifiers. Additionally, the results suggest that achieving higher overall accuracy in classifying a large urban area using 5 m resolution satellite dataset is difficult.

Impact of Land Use and Land Cover Changes on Urban Ecosystem Service Value in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Md Mostafizur Rahman et al.

Summary: Urban ecosystem services play a crucial role in sustaining life and addressing challenges like climate change and pollution. This study examined the land use dynamics in Dhaka over the past three decades and found that as built-up areas increased, ecosystem services value decreased by 59.55%, with water bodies being the largest contributor. The findings suggest that even a small change in land use could have a significant impact on total ecosystem services value.
