Interlaboratory assessments for dioxin-like POPs (2016/2017 and 2018/2019)

Heidelore Fiedler et al.

Summary: In the two rounds of UNEP-coordinated assessments of POPs laboratories, participation varied across global regions with different levels of analytical capacity, particularly limited in Africa and Central and Eastern European countries, but increasing in Latin America. Laboratories using gas chromatographs coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometers had the best results, but encountered challenges with human milk and fish samples in the last round, indicating a need for improved performance, especially at low concentrations in foodstuffs.

Survey of bioavailable PCDDs, PCDFs, dioxin-like PCBs, and PBBs in air, water, and sediment media using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) deployed in the Hartbeespoort Dam area, South Africa

Cornelius Rimayi et al.

Summary: A survey was conducted in the Hartbeespoort Dam area in South Africa to investigate the distribution and concentrations of various priority persistent organic pollutants in ambient air, water, and sediment. The results showed that air and sediment carried higher levels of toxicity compared to water.

Environmental contamination and human exposure of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in China: A review

Minghan Zhu et al.

Summary: PCB contamination in China shows regional disparities, with higher levels in East China and in areas with intensive industrial activities or e-waste disassembling. The unplanned UP-PCBs from industrial processes are becoming increasingly significant. There is a need for further studies on the accumulation and migration of PCBs in food webs, and for more investigations to assess human health risks accurately.

Prenatal exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and cognitive ability in early childhood

Naomi Azar et al.

Summary: The study found that prenatal exposure to background levels of PBDEs, especially BDE-47, was associated with lower IQ scores in boys, but not in girls. This suggests that exposure to PBDEs during early development may have a sex-dependent and detrimental effect on a child's neurodevelopmental trajectory.

Determination of heavy metals in selected fish species and seawater from the South Durban Industrial Basin, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Roshila Moodley et al.

Summary: The study found elevated levels of arsenic and chromium in fish and seawater in the South Durban Industrial Basin (SDIB), but determined that there are currently no significant health risks for consumers. However, due to higher levels of arsenic, it is recommended to consume fish from the SDIB in moderation or avoid those with high arsenic content to prevent long-term toxic effects.

Global status of dioxin emission and China's role in reducing the emission

Rongrong Lei et al.

Summary: This study compiled the global status of dioxin emissions across 150 countries/regions, using China as an example. It found that open burning processes were the most important sources of dioxins globally, with emissions in developed countries remaining low and stable, while those in developing countries remained high. China's dioxin emissions have been stable around 9 kg TEQ, with industries such as metal production and waste incineration having significant potential for reduction.
