Inequality and individuals' social networks: the other face of social capital

Atilano Pena-Lopez et al.

Summary: Social capital is a controversial concept that can be associated with closure and privilege maintenance. Access to and extraction of social network resources depend on social structure, with individuals possessing high levels of economic and human capital enjoying improved networks with instrumental relations. This essential inequality in the endowment of social capital can exacerbate economic inequality and limit the effectiveness of traditional redistributive policies when inequality is socially embedded.

Difference-in-Differences with multiple time periods

Brantly Callaway et al.

Summary: This article discusses identification, estimation, and inference procedures for treatment effect parameters using the Difference-in-Differences (DiD) method, which is applicable to multiple time periods, variation in treatment timing, and when the parallel trends assumption holds potentially only after conditioning on observed covariates. The proposed methods allow for highlighting treatment effect heterogeneity across different dimensions and summarizing the overall effect of participating in the treatment.

Flood vulnerability and food security in eastern India: A threat to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals

Anu Susan Sam et al.

Summary: The food security situation in India has improved due to various factors, including economic growth, increased agricultural productivity, and hunger eradication programmes. However, floods continue to pose a threat to households' food security, with certain factors such as family type and property losses impacting food security levels. Integrated strategies are needed to effectively address food security issues, especially in flood-prone areas where severity is increasing. The study findings can be beneficial for policymakers in India and countries facing similar challenges in tackling food insecurity resulting from flood hazards.

India flood inventory: creation of a multi-source national geospatial database to facilitate comprehensive flood research

Manabendra Saharia et al.

Summary: Floods are one of the most devastating natural hazards globally, with India being one of the worst affected countries. Developing a new database that combines global and local data is urgently needed to minimize the impact of floods. The ongoing effort to build the India Flood Inventory (IFI) aims to advance understanding of flood processes in the region.

Measuring Natural Hazard-Related Disasters through Self-Reports

Ben Edwards et al.

Summary: This article examines the increasing exposure to various natural hazard-related disasters due to climate change. It developed a cumulative measure of exposure to natural hazard-related disasters at the area level and an individual-level measure of disaster impact. Using ecometric techniques, a reliable community average measure of exposure to natural hazard-related disasters was generated, and it was found that disasters reported by neighborhood officials were more strongly related to official reports.

Does inequality-adjusted human development reduce the impact of natural disasters? A gendered perspective

Joyita Roy Chowdhury et al.

Summary: This study finds that reducing inequality-adjusted human development index (IHD) can lead to fewer flood fatalities in different states of India. The research shows that regions with higher IHDI scores generally have lower flood death rates, and with an increase in IHDI, the number of male flood fatalities is lower than that of females.

Adaptation interventions and their effect on vulnerability in developing countries: Help, hindrance or irrelevance?

Siri Eriksen et al.

Summary: This paper critically reviews the outcomes of internationally-funded interventions aimed at climate change adaptation and vulnerability reduction, highlighting the inadvertent reinforcement, redistribution, or creation of new sources of vulnerability. It suggests potential avenues for overcoming these issues, such as shifting the terms of engagement between practitioners and local populations, and expanding the understanding of vulnerability to encompass global contexts and drivers.
