Disruption of Synaptic Transmission in the Bed Nucleus of the Stria Terminalis Reduces Seizure-Induced Death in DBA/1 Mice and Alters Brainstem E/I Balance

Maya Xia et al.

Summary: Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the leading cause of death in refractory epilepsy patients. This study found that an extended amygdalar structure, the dorsal bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (dBNST), may be involved in seizure-induced respiratory arrest (S-IRA) and death by influencing brainstem respiratory regions. Disruption of synaptic output from the dBNST improved survival following S-IRA in mice.

Amygdala lesions reduce seizure-induced respiratory arrest in DBA/1 mice

Anthony Marincovich et al.

Summary: The passage discusses that sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the most common cause of mortality in patients with refractory epilepsy, and respiratory arrest is thought to be a major factor in many cases. Research suggests that the amygdala plays a critical role in seizure-induced respiratory arrest, and lesions in this area have been shown to reduce the incidence of SUDEP in a mouse model.

Neurochemistry of the Kolliker-Fuse nucleus from a respiratory perspective

Adrienn G. Varga et al.

Summary: The Kolliker-Fuse nucleus in the dorsolateral pons of mammals plays a significant role in respiration and upper airway control. Understanding its diverse neurochemical composition is essential to comprehend its contributions to respiratory physiology. Research on this topic can aid in various future studies on neural control of respiration in health and disease.

Enhanced synaptic transmission in the extended amygdala and altered excitability in an extended amygdala to brainstem circuit in a Dravet syndrome mouse model

Wen Wei Yan et al.

Summary: The study revealed alterations in neuronal excitability in the BNST of DS mice, including BNST to PBN projection neurons. These changes may be driving factors for comorbid aspects of DS, including respiratory dysfunction and sudden death.

Forebrain projection neurons target functionally diverse respiratory control areas in the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata

Pedro Trevizan-Bau et al.

Summary: Eupnea is generated by neural circuits in the ponto-medullary brainstem and modulated by higher brain inputs for voluntary control of breathing and orofacial behaviors. Descending inputs from cortical areas predominantly target the PAG and KFn, suggesting specific relay of volitional motor commands for vocalization and coordination of breathing with other orofacial behaviors. Additionally, limbic or autonomic systems connect to broadly distributed downstream bulbar respiratory networks.

Vasopressin and Breathing: Review of Evidence for Respiratory Effects of the Antidiuretic Hormone

Michal Proczka et al.

Summary: Vasopressin, also known as antidiuretic hormone, plays a crucial role in regulating various body functions including blood pressure, sympathetic activity, glucose homeostasis, and stress response. Its release is triggered by stimuli such as hyperosmolality, hypovolemia, hypotension, and hypoxia, and it is involved in respiratory regulation through interactions with brainstem nuclei and V1a receptors.
