Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Therapeutic Mechanisms for Stroke

Yuchen Zhang et al.

Summary: Due to the aging population, stroke has become more prevalent, leading to increased socioeconomic burden. Stem cell transplantation, particularly using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), has shown promise in treating stroke by attenuating inflammation, promoting therapeutic effects, inducing blood vessel formation, promoting neurogenesis, reducing infarct volume, and replacing damaged cells. This review discusses the mechanisms of MSCs and their secreted extracellular vehicles (EVs) in stroke treatment.

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in Ischemic Brain Injury

Beverly Brooks et al.

Summary: Ischemic brain injury is a major cause of death worldwide with limited treatment options. Stem cell-based regenerative therapies, specifically mesenchymal stromal cells, show promise in stroke treatment, but further research is needed to fully understand their cell function.

Filling the gaps on stroke research: Focus on inflammation and immunity

Damien Levard et al.

Summary: Over the past two decades, researchers have hoped for a new era in stroke treatment with a combination of reperfusion and neuroprotection, but despite positive results in preclinical stroke models, clinical trials have not shown efficacy. The existing preclinical data have depicted an incomplete picture of stroke pathophysiology, and there is a gap between clinical trials and preclinical results on stroke.

Emerging neuroprotective strategies for the treatment of ischemic stroke: An overview of clinical and preclinical studies

Surojit Paul et al.

Summary: Stroke is a major cause of disability and death globally, with an increasing incidence particularly in younger age groups and low to middle-income countries. While treatment options are limited, advancements in recanalization therapy have shown promise in helping patients recover from ischemic stroke. Development of neuroprotective agents for acute ischemic stroke is urgently needed to protect the brain, extend the therapeutic time window, and improve outcomes.

Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Autophagy: Potential Targets of Mesenchymal Stem Cells-Based Therapies in Ischemic Stroke

Jialin He et al.

Summary: Ischemic stroke is a major cause of death worldwide, with limited treatment options focusing on restoring blood flow; autophagy plays a vital role in brain recovery post-stroke, while dysfunction can worsen cerebral injury; mesenchymal stem cells alleviate oxidative stress and inflammation, regulate autophagy imbalances, and show promise as a treatment for ischemic stroke.

Treg cell-derived osteopontin promotes microglia-mediated white matter repair after ischemic stroke

Ligen Shi et al.

Summary: The study found that after experimental stroke, Treg cells infiltrate the brain in mice and promote white matter repair and functional recovery. Treg cells enhance microglial reparative activity, promoting oligodendrogenesis and white matter repair. Increasing Treg cell numbers can improve white matter integrity and rescue neurological functions in the long term.

Analysis of Thrombolysis Process for Acute Ischemic Stroke in Urban and Rural Hospitals in Nova Scotia Canada

Tessa Bulmer et al.

Summary: This study examined the thrombolysis processes for acute ischemic stroke patients in urban and rural hospitals in Nova Scotia, Canada, as well as healthcare professionals' views on various treatment topics. It found that physicians in rural settings are more hesitant to use tPA, leading to treatment delays. Discrepancies in treatment and delays were noted between urban and rural hospitals, highlighting the need for further education and improvements.

Suppressing STAT3 activity protects the endothelial barrier from VEGF-mediated vascular permeability

Li Wang et al.

Summary: Vascular permeability triggered by inflammation or ischemia promotes edema and worsens disease progression, while VEGF plays a crucial role in regulating vascular barrier function. Targeting STAT3 can effectively reduce vascular permeability induced by VEGF.
