Non-Invasive Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation for the Treatment of Fibromyalgia Symptoms: A Study Protocol

Andres Molero-Chamizo et al.

Summary: Stimulation of the vagus nerve can reduce pain in conditions like headache and rheumatoid arthritis, and may benefit fibromyalgia patients by normalizing autonomic and immune functions. A randomized controlled trial will evaluate the effects of non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation on fibromyalgia symptoms.

Heart Rate Variability and Pain: A Systematic Review

Giuseppe Forte et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the association between heart rate variability (HRV) and experimental pain. The results showed significant changes in both the sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous systems during painful stimulation, and HRV was associated with pain induction and subjective measures of pain. Higher parasympathetic activity was correlated with better self-regulation capacities and pain inhibition.

Direct measurement of vagal tone in rats does not show correlation to HRV

Joseph T. Marmerstein et al.

Summary: This study successfully recorded neural activity of the cervical vagus nerve in rats using custom carbon nanotube yarn electrodes, finding no correlation between baseline vagal activity and common HRV metrics. The study also discovered that average vagal activity is higher during inspiration and lower during expiration, but is not correlated with HRV.

Enhanced cardiac vagal tone in mental fatigue: Analysis of heart rate variability in Time-on-Task, recovery, and reactivity

Andras Matuz et al.

Summary: This study utilized different tasks and documentary viewing conditions to investigate the changes in heart rate variability during task execution, duration, and recovery processes. The findings indicated an increase in HRV levels with prolonged cognitive task duration, but no change in the documentary viewing group. Additionally, the study revealed that task duration was associated with increased subjective fatigue levels, decreased heart rate, and increased HRV.

Meaning in life and vagally-mediated heart rate variability: Evidence of a quadratic relationship at baseline and vagal reactivity differences

Kevin Dang et al.

Summary: The study found a quadratic relationship between higher meaning in life (MIL) and vagally-mediated heart rate variability (VmHRV), with higher MIL associated with greater stress reactivity. However, MIL did not enhance stress attenuation. Overall, the findings suggest that cardiac vagal tone and reactivity are linked to MIL, shedding light on the physiological processes underlying the relationship between MIL and health outcomes.

Does transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation affect vagally mediated heart rate variability? A living and interactive Bayesian meta-analysis

Vinzent Wolf et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the effects of taVNS on vmHRV and found that acute taVNS does not alter vmHRV compared to sham, suggesting that vmHRV is not a robust biomarker for acute taVNS. The concept of living meta-analyses could lead to transformational benefits in emerging fields such as non-invasive brain stimulation by increasing transparency and timeliness.
