Inflammatory cytokines, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and risk of one-year vascular events, death, and poor functional outcome after stroke and transient ischemic attack

S. Coveney et al.

Summary: The study found that inflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-8, and hsCRP independently predicted one-year recurrent vascular events, with IL-6 and hsCRP also predicting one-year fatality. This suggests that baseline inflammatory cytokines can predict late recurrence and supports the rationale for randomized trials of anti-inflammatory agents for prevention after stroke, indicating targeted therapy to high-risk patients with high baseline inflammation may be beneficial.

Disruptions of Anaerobic Gut Bacteria Are Associated with Stroke and Post-stroke Infection: a Prospective Case-Control Study

Bastiaan W. Haak et al.

Summary: Recent preclinical studies have shown the potential role of intestinal bacterial composition in stroke risk and post-stroke infections. The abundance of bacteria capable of producing trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and butyrate in stroke patients was found to be disrupted compared to non-stroke controls. Additionally, lower levels of TMAO and butyrate-producing bacteria were associated with stroke and post-stroke infections.

Rapid gut dysbiosis induced by stroke exacerbates brain infarction in turn

Kaiyu Xu et al.

Summary: Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, and neuroprotective approaches have been unsuccessful in clinical trials. This study reveals a reciprocal relationship between stroke and gut dysbiosis, with acute ischemic stroke triggering dysbiosis of the gut microbiome, exacerbating brain infarction. Administering certain treatments was able to alleviate post-stroke brain infarction, illustrating the translational value of the brain-gut axis in stroke treatment.

Regulation of intestinal immunity and tissue repair by enteric glia

Franze Progatzky et al.

Summary: Enteric glial cells play important roles in immune regulation and tissue repair in the mouse intestine, with IFN gamma signaling being central to intestinal homeostasis and tissue repair. The gliosis and upregulation of specific genes in enteric glial cells contribute to immune homeostasis and tissue repair after parasite infection-induced intestinal damage.

Gut Microbiota and Acute Central Nervous System Injury: A New Target for Therapeutic Intervention

Bin Yuan et al.

Summary: Research on the role of gut microbiota in acute central nervous system injuries has shown that altered gut microbiota composition can worsen secondary brain injury, cognitive impairments, and motor dysfunctions by triggering pro-inflammatory responses. Modulating gut microbiota with fecal microbiota transplantation, probiotics, and prebiotics may offer effective therapeutic interventions to alleviate secondary brain injury and improve functional outcomes after acute CNS injuries. This area of research represents an exciting frontier in both clinical and experimental medicine.

Summary: The study revealed that patients with SAP had a distinct gut microbiome composition compared to non-SAP patients, with a depletion of Roseburia and enrichment of opportunistic pathogens. Roseburia was identified as a protective factor against SAP. Microbial dysbiosis increased the risk of SAP.

Circulating Levels of the Short-Chain Fatty Acid Acetate Mediate the Effect of the Gut Microbiome on Visceral Fat

Ana Nogal et al.

Summary: The study suggests that gut microbiome composition and diversity may influence circulating acetate levels and that acetate may have a positive impact on certain cardio-metabolic diseases by reducing visceral fat. Key bacterial genera such as Coprococcus may benefit host health by producing vitamins B and SCFAs, while Lachnoclostridium may have an opposing effect by negatively affecting acetate levels and being involved in the biosynthesis of detrimental lipid compounds.
