β-Glucan-Induced Immuno-Modulation: A Role for the Intestinal Microbiota and Short-Chain Fatty Acids in Common Carp

Jules Petit et al.

Summary: Dietary supplementation of fish with beta-glucans has been found to have immunomodulatory effects, but the exact mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, the researchers identified the active naive microbiota in the intestine of common carp and found that certain bacteria are capable of fermenting dietary beta-glucans. They also observed fermentation of two different beta-glucan preparations in vitro, resulting in the production of distinct short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). Additionally, they demonstrated the potential immunomodulatory effects of SCFAs on head kidney leukocytes, suggesting a possible role in beta-glucan-induced immunomodulation.

Immune responses to prebiotics in farmed salmonid fish: How transcriptomic approaches help interpret responses

D. Porter et al.

Summary: Prebiotics in aquaculture are composed of complex carbohydrate molecules that are metabolized by microbial communities in the host gut. The sources and processing of prebiotics vary between species and types, making it difficult to determine how they work and the host responses. Advances in high-throughput technologies are helping to understand the mechanisms and methods of action of prebiotics.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.

Analysis of immunostimulatory responses and immune tolerance to β-glucans in rainbow trout cell lines

M. Camino Ordas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of beta-glucans on rainbow trout using the RTS11 and RTgutGC cell lines. The results showed that RTS11 monocytes/macrophages were more reactive to beta-glucans, while beta-glucans also had immunostimulatory effects on gut epithelial cells. Additionally, beta-glucans were found to induce tolerance in both cell lines, with only interleukin 6 transcription significantly lower in cells previously exposed to beta-glucans.

The use of probiotics in animal feeding for safe production and as potential alternatives to antibiotics

Mbarga M. J. Arsene et al.

Summary: The primary purpose of animal rearing is to produce safe food for human consumption, but the environment and well-being of the animals should also be considered. Antibiotic abuse has led to resistance and residue issues, making probiotics a suitable alternative.
