Comparative ab initio calculations of SrTiO3, BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and SrZrO3 (001) and (111) surfaces as well as oxygen vacancies

R. I. Eglitis et al.

Summary: The paper presents the results of ab initio calculations for the surfaces of perovskites SrTiO3, BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and SrZrO3. It shows that the upper layer atoms relax inwards towards the bulk on the (001) surface, and the second layer atoms relax upwards. The surface energies for AO and BO2-terminations on the (001) surfaces are almost equal, while the surface energies for AO(3) and B-terminated (111) surfaces are quite different.

Tuning the magnetic and electronic properties of strontium titanate by carbon doping

Hui Zeng et al.

Summary: The magnetic and electronic properties of C-doped SrTiO3 strongly depend on the distance between carbon dopants, with nearest neighbors showing stable nonmagnetic features. Increasing C-C distance leads to transitions from n-type nonmagnetic metal to ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic half-metal or semiconductor in GGA calculations. The possibility of tailoring these properties could extend the applications of strontium titanate as a magnetic or optoelectronic material.
