Microstructure and morphology of Si crystals grown in pure Si and Al-Si melts

L. Toropova et al.

Summary: The microstructure of Al-40 wt%Si samples solidified in an electromagnetic levitation furnace under high melt undercooling is studied. Feathery and dendritic structures of primary Si are observed, and the shape of dendritic crystals solidifying from liquid Si and hypereutectic Al-Si melts at high growth undercoolings is analyzed. Experimental and theoretical dendrite tips of Si and Al-Si samples are found to be in good agreement.

Mathematical modeling of bulk and directional crystallization with the moving phase transition layer

Liubov Toropova et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the combined effect of directional and bulk crystallization in a phase transition layer, analyzing the nucleation and evolution of newly born particles through mathematical modeling. The analytical solutions for two models, with and without fluctuations in crystal growth velocities, are obtained using the saddle-point technique, providing insights into the composition of the mushy layer and solidification kinetics.

Shape functions for dendrite tips of SCN and Si

L. Toropova

Summary: In this work, an analytical theory describing the growth of dendrite tips in undercooled melts without convection is tested against experimental data of succinonitrile (SCN) and Si. The results show that the recently discovered shape function accurately describes the region of the dendrite tip up to a certain distance from its vertex.

Role of interfacial energy anisotropy in dendrite orientation in Al-Zn alloys: A phase field study

Yuhong Zhao et al.

Summary: The influence of interfacial energy anisotropy on dendrite morphology was investigated in Al-Zn alloys using the phase-field method. Different types of dendrite morphology were observed, and the occurrence of solute segregation holes and liquid grooves in dendrites was found to be influenced by the anisotropic interfacial energy. Supersaturation was found to be strongly correlated with the formation of liquid holes and liquid grooves as well as the degree of solute segregation. The relationship between interfacial energy anisotropy, Zn concentration, elastic anisotropy, and dendrite orientation deserves attention.

Solidification of ternary melts with a two-phase layer

L. Toropova et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the nonstationary solidification of three-component systems with two moving phase transition regions - the main and cotectic layers. A non-linear moving boundary problem has been developed and its analytical solutions have been determined. It was found that variations in the initial impurity concentration significantly affect the ratio between the lengths of the two-phase layers.

Dynamical law of the phase interface motion in the presence of crystals nucleation

Liubov Toropova et al.

Summary: In this paper, a theory of solid/liquid phase interface motion in an undercooled melt with nucleation and crystal growth is developed. The set of integrodifferential kinetic, heat and mass transfer equations are analytically solved to describe the two-phase and liquid layers separated by the moving phase transition interface. The main result is the propagation law of the phase interface, which is affected by crystal nucleation. The nucleation and crystal growth processes emit latent crystallization heat, reducing the melt undercooling and constraining the thickness of the two-phase layer.

The shape of dendritic tips: a test of theory with computations and experiments

Dmitri V. Alexandrov et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the study of the tip shape of dendritic crystals grown from a supercooled liquid, testing a recently developed theory that defines the shape function of dendrites against computational simulations and experimental data. The results show that the recently found shape function accurately describes the tip region of dendritic crystals.
