Comprehensive Neonatal Cardiac, Feed and Wrap, Non-contrast, Non-sedated, Free-breathing Compressed Sensing 4D Flow MRI Assessment

Hannah R. Panayiotou et al.

Summary: This study tested the feasibility of compressed sensing (CS) 4D flow MRI in the neonatal population and compared it with standard two-dimensional phase-contrast (PC) flow MRI. The results showed that CS 4D flow MRI quantification is similar to 2D PC free-breathing imaging with excellent interobserver and intraobserver agreement.

Fundamentals of turbulent flow spectrum imaging

Hannes Dillinger et al.

Summary: This study introduces a mathematical framework and validation method for turbulent flow spectrum imaging using phase-contrast MRI, evaluates systematic errors in quantitative turbulence parameter estimation, and proposes a novel method for probing the Lagrangian velocity spectra of turbulent flows. Results indicate that tailored velocity-compensated gradients can improve the accuracy of estimating the velocity spectrum of turbulent flows.

Intraventricular Flow Simulations in Singular Right Ventricles Reveal Deteriorated Washout and Low Vortex Formation

Anna Gruenwald et al.

Summary: The study compares intraventricular flow in single right ventricle (SRV) patients and healthy left ventricle (LV) subjects, showing significantly lower values for vortex formation time and turbulent kinetic energy in SRV patients. Vortex formation does not progress to the apex in SRV patients, and washout is significantly lower as well.

Impact of mixed valvular disease on coarctation hemodynamics using patient-specific lumped parameter and Lattice Boltzmann modeling

Reza Sadeghi et al.

Summary: The optimal course of intervention for patients with coexisting coarctation of the aorta (COA) and mixed valvular disease (MVD) is uncertain. This study developed a computational-mechanics framework to investigate the impact of COA and MVD on aortic fluid dynamics. The results suggest that the presence and severity of MVD should be considered in the evaluation of risks in patients with COA.

Turbulent Intensity of Blood Flow in the Healthy Aorta Increases With Dobutamine Stress and is Related to Cardiac Output

Jonathan Sundin et al.

Summary: In healthy thoracic aorta, dobutamine stress leads to an increase in blood flow turbulence intensity, which is strongly related to cardiac output. Quantifying turbulence intensity parameters with cardiac stress may serve as a risk assessment for aortic disease development.

Evaluation of Computational Methodologies for Accurate Prediction of Wall Shear Stress and Turbulence Parameters in a Patient-Specific Aorta

Emily Louise Manchester et al.

Summary: The study evaluated different computational approaches and post-processing methods in simulations of a patient-specific aorta. Well-resolved laminar simulations were found to accurately predict many laminar-based parameters in disturbed flows, with no clear benefit in running a high-resolution laminar simulation over a large-eddy simulation (LES) based on comparable computational cost. Post-processing typical laminar simulation results with a phase-averaged approach is a simple and cost-effective way to improve accuracy of lower-resolution simulation results.
