A Systematic Review of Head Impacts and Acceleration Associated with Soccer

Summary: Epidemiological studies are being conducted to determine if heading the ball in professional soccer poses a risk for disease or premature death. A systematic review of scientific literature was conducted to identify factors that determine head impact acceleration during experiments and observations in soccer. Measurement methodology differences were found to be important determinants of head acceleration, with accelerometers fixed to the head providing reliable information. Exposures differed between genders and age groups, with women experiencing higher acceleration but lower frequency impacts on average. Head-to-head collisions resulted in high levels of exposure and potential concussions. The cumulative number of heading impacts over a playing career was recommended as the main exposure metric in epidemiological studies of professional players.

Summary: The study found that the frequency of heading in football matches is approximately 1 to 9 headers per player per game, while in small-sided games during training, the number of headers per player per game varies from 0 to 1. Research indicates that head acceleration, head rotational velocity, and overall movement kinematics during heading action are the most commonly reported biomechanical variables. Several studies did not observe a negative impact on cognitive test performance following exposure to heading, and those that did only found negative effects on specific outcome measures such as reaction time and memory function.

The system aims to help researchers and practitioners launch target-oriented studies for the improvement and reevaluation of SSTs in practice.
