Mediators between physical activity and academic achievement: A systematic review

Maria Eugenia Visier-Alfonso et al.

Summary: The study suggests that physical activity may positively influence academic achievement through factors such as fitness levels, cognition, mental well-being, and exercise-related behaviors acting as mediators. However, due to the cross-sectional nature of most studies, causal relationships cannot be definitively established at this time.

A Meta-analysis of the Relationship between Motor Skills and Executive Functions in Typically-developing Children

Aditi Gandotra et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis investigated the relationship between motor skills and executive functions in typically developing children aged 3 to 12, revealing a significant positive association between them. Balance and manual dexterity were found to have the strongest independent associations with all EF components, with an age effect between balance and response inhibition. The study emphasizes the importance of including cognitively engaging motor tasks in intervention programs for promoting motor skills and higher-order cognitive skills in children.

Association between motor competence and executive functions in children

Maicon Rodrigues Albuquerque et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between executive functions and motor competence in typically developing children aged 6-11 years old. The results showed a significant and medium correlation between EFs and MC, with this correlation remaining significant in both younger and older children. The study suggests the need to promote the development of MC and EFs in children, especially in younger age groups.

Through the Looking Glass: A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Evidence, Providing New Insight for Motor Competence and Health

Lisa M. Barnett et al.

Summary: This systematic review compiled evidence on the role of motor competence in children's physical activity, weight status, perceived motor competence, and health-related fitness. Strong evidence was found for negative association between motor competence and weight status, as well as positive pathway from motor competence to fitness. However, evidence for other pathways varied, including indeterminate and insufficient evidence for some associations. Future research should focus on robust longitudinal studies and experimental designs to further test the proposed conceptual model.

Children's Involvement in Different Sport Types Differentiates Their Motor Competence but Not Their Executive Functions

Martha Spanou et al.

Summary: Sports have a positive impact on children's health, specifically on their motor skills and cognitive functions. However, the influence of different types of sports on motor competence and executive functions is not well understood. This study found that participation in different types of sports led to significant differences in motor competence, with closed-skill sports showing better performance. However, no significant differences were found in executive functions. Additionally, no gender differences were detected in motor competence and executive functions when provided with the same opportunities.

Do Physical Fitness and Executive Function Mediate the Relationship between Physical Activity and Academic Achievement? An Examination Using Structural Equation Modelling

Adria Muntaner-Mas et al.

Summary: This study used structural equation modeling to examine the association between physical activity, physical fitness, executive function, and academic achievement. The results showed significant positive direct associations between physical activity and physical fitness, physical fitness and executive function, and executive function and academic achievement. The study also found indirect associations between physical activity and executive function mediated by physical fitness, and between physical fitness and academic achievement through executive function.

Meta-analysis of movement-based interventions to aid academic and behavioral outcomes: A taxonomy of relevance and integration

Myrto F. Mavilidi et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis evaluated the effects of movement strategies during academic time on cognitive processing, memory, behavioral control, and academic skills in children and adolescents. Different levels of integration and relevance of the movement strategies to the learning content were found to have significant impacts on outcomes. High-integration and high-relevance movement strategies in chronic physical activity interventions had positive effects on memory, while low-integration and low-relevance strategies had larger effects on behavioral control measures in both long-term and acute physical activity.

Effects of chronic physical activity on cognition across the lifespan: a systematic meta-review of randomized controlled trials and realist synthesis of contextualized mechanisms

Summary: In the field of chronic physical activity (PA) and cognition research, problems include inconsistent grading of methodological quality, low consideration of external validity, multiple moderators at participant-, intervention-, study-level but neglect of context-level moderators. Future research should focus on designing PA interventions and their contexts to mobilize different mechanisms supporting individual and joint effects on cognition.

Summary: The study comparing interventions targeting sedentary behaviors or physical activity (PA) or physical fitness in preventing obesity in 6- to 12-year-old children found that fitness interventions may have a better effect than PA interventions, while adding sedentary behavior to the intervention did not increase effectiveness. Overall, the effects were more pronounced in girls, but less significant in disadvantaged children.

Executive Function, Working Memory, and Verbal Fluency in Relation to Non-Verbal Intelligence in Greek-Speaking School-Age Children with Developmental Language Disorder

Asimina M. Ralli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between working memory, executive functions, verbal fluency and non-verbal intelligence in Greek-speaking school-age children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), compared to typically developing peers. The results showed that children with DLD scored lower on non-verbal intelligence tests and performed worse in working memory, executive functions, and verbal fluency measures, despite no significant differences in inhibition measures. The findings emphasize the impact of DLD on cognitive abilities and highlight the need for further research in this area.
