Nanoscale Control of the Metal-Insulator Transition at LaAlO3/KTaO3 Interfaces

Muqing Yu et al.

Summary: Recent reports of superconductivity at KTaO3 (KTO) (110) and (111) interfaces have generated significant interest due to the higher critical temperature and unique properties compared to the more extensively studied SrTiO3 (STO)-based heterostructures. In this study, researchers have successfully created reconfigurable conducting structures at intrinsically insulating LaAlO3/ KTO(110) and (111) interfaces using two established methods. The KTO(110)-based devices exhibit tunable superconductivity at low temperatures, while a one-dimensional nanowire device demonstrates single-electron-transistor behavior. However, the KTO(111)-based device remains metallic without becoming superconducting. These findings present new opportunities for investigating superconductivity mechanisms and developing quantum devices with strong spin-orbit interactions, superconducting behavior, and nanoscale dimensions.

Surface Charge Writing and Nonvolatile Control of Superconductivity in a LaAlO3/KTaO3(111) Heterostructure

Siyuan Hong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the oxide interface between LaAlO3 and KTaO3(111) and demonstrates the ability to host an electron gas that condenses into superconductivity at low temperatures. By using a biased conducting atomic force microscope tip, the researchers achieved local and nonvolatile control of the electron gas, allowing them to tune the conduction of the buried LaAlO3/KTaO3(111) interface from conducting (superconducting) to insulating states. The tuning effects were stable for over 20 hours at room temperature, with a maximum modulation of carrier density exceeding 8 x 10^13/cm^2.

Two-dimensional superconductivity and anisotropic transport at KTaO3 (111) interfaces

Changjiang Liu et al.

Summary: The study discovers superconductivity in electron gases formed at interfaces between certain materials, with a relatively high superconducting transition temperature and clear two-dimensional superconductivity. In some samples, a spontaneous in-plane transport anisotropy is observed before the onset of superconductivity, indicating the emergence of a distinct stripe-like phase.

One-dimensional Kronig-Penney superlattices at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface

Megan Briggeman et al.

Summary: Semiconductor heterostructures and ultracold neutral atomic lattices mimic essential properties of one-dimensional electronic systems. Conductive atomic force microscope lithography on oxide interfaces can create ballistic few-mode electron waveguides. Imposed artificial Kronig-Penney-like superlattice potentials on these waveguides can fracture electronic subbands into new subbands with magnetically tunable fractional conductance.

Electric field control of superconductivity at the LaAlO3/KTaO3(111) interface

Zheng Chen et al.

Summary: The study shows that the superconducting state at the oxide interface between LaAlO3 and KTaO3(111) can be tuned by applying a gate voltage across KTaO3, resulting in a dome-shaped dependence of transition temperature on gate voltage. The electric gating affects mobility more than carrier density. As the temperature decreases, the resistance saturates at the lowest temperature on both superconducting and insulating sides, indicating the emergence of a quantum metallic state associated with a failed superconductor and/or fragile insulator.
