Antibiotic resistance in the environment

D. G. Joakim Larsson et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a global health challenge, with factors driving evolution and transmission being important to quantify and identify. The environment plays a crucial role, and understanding and managing the resistance crisis can be achieved through implementing monitoring and assessment methods to reduce risks.

Multidrug Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae ST101 Clone Survival Chain From Inpatients to Hospital Effluent After Chlorine Treatment

Laura Ioana Popa et al.

Summary: This study confirmed the transmission of a multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae ST101 clone from hospital to wastewater, and its persistence after chlorine treatment. This raises the risk of surface water contamination and further dissemination to different components of the trophic chain, including humans.

Mobile Carbapenemase Genes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Eun-Jeong Yoon et al.

Summary: This article highlights the challenge of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa in clinical settings, focusing on the global mechanisms of carbapenem resistance and the horizontal dissemination of drug resistance determinants through mobile genetic elements. The review also examines the modular mobile elements, including carbapenemase-encoding genes, for their structures and implications in antimicrobial therapy.

A Review on Occurrence and Spread of Antibiotic Resistance in Wastewaters and in Wastewater Treatment Plants: Mechanisms and Perspectives

Cansu Uluseker et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the sources, spread, and removal mechanisms of antibiotic resistance genes in microbial communities of wastewaters, treatment plants, and downstream recipients. The misuse of antibiotics has led to the development and spread of antibiotic resistance worldwide, with AR being transferred amongst bacteria via gene transfer. Wastewater treatment plants have diverse microorganism communities that provide a favorable environment for AR spread. Advanced treatment methods like UV, ozonation, and oxidation are more effective in removing ARGs and ARB than conventional activated sludge treatment. Further research is needed to develop reliable mathematical models to study the dynamics and reduction of AR in WWTPs.

Subtypes, resistance and virulence platforms in extended-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Romanian isolates

Irina Gheorghe et al.

Summary: This study reports the resistome and virulome of 33 extended drug-resistant and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii strains from patients in Bucharest, Romania. The isolates were found to be extensively drug-resistant, with high diversity in resistance genes and sequence types. The data can help understand the characteristics of these XDR AB isolates, support the implementation of infection control measures, and contribute to the development of new treatments.

Antibiotic resistance of non-fermenting Gram-negative bacilli isolated at a large Infectious Diseases Hospital in North-Eastern Romania, during an 11-year period

Elena Roxana Buzila et al.

Summary: The study found that Acinetobacter spp. showed over 70% resistance to the majority of antibiotics, and three pandrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were identified. The resistance rate was 2.91% for P. aeruginosa and 3.33% for Acinetobacter spp. The results also showed significant differences in antibiotic susceptibility between strains isolated from non-sterile sites versus sterile sites, with Acinetobacter spp. exhibiting higher resistance levels.
