Massively Parallel Arrays of Size-Controlled Metallic Nanogaps with Gap-Widths Down to the Sub-3-nm Level

Sihai Luo et al.

Summary: The reported technique allows for tuning the gap-width from more than 30 nm to less than 3 nm, enabling the fabrication of molecular rectifiers. It also describes a method for fabricating massively parallel nanogap arrays with nanometric size control over large areas, which exhibit strong plasmonic resonances and act as high-performance substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. These methods extend the range of metallic nanostructures that can be fabricated over large areas and have potential applications in molecular electronics, plasmonics, and biosensing.

Scalable Fabrication of Metallic Nanogaps at the Sub-10 nm Level

Sihai Luo et al.

Summary: This study evaluates some of the most promising techniques for nanogap fabrication, including traditional methods like photolithography, electron-beam lithography, and focused ion beam milling, as well as newer methods using novel electrochemical and mechanical means for patterning. The physical principles behind each method are reviewed, and their strengths and limitations for nanogap patterning are discussed in terms of resolution, fidelity, speed, ease of implementation, versatility, and scalability to large substrate sizes.

G-Doping-Based Metal-Semiconductor Junction

Avtandil Tavkhelidze et al.

Summary: Geometry-induced doping (G-doping) has been successfully achieved in semiconductor nanograting layers, leading to the fabrication of p-p(v) junction with significantly low forward voltage and reduced reverse current. The formation mechanism of p-p(v) junction has been proposed, explaining the impact of G-doping depth and depletion width on the reduction of reverse current. Theoretical analysis shows that the decrease in reverse current is attributed to the lower carrier generation rate resulting from the reduced density of quantum states within the G-doped region.
