Strategies for improving photoelectrochemical water splitting performance of Si-based electrodes

Caihong Cheng et al.

Summary: Silicon, as a narrow bandgap semiconductor with broad absorption for sunlight, is considered a competitive material for solar-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting. However, major barriers such as low photovoltage, sluggish kinetics, and poor stability exist in constructing efficient and stable Si-based PEC cells. Strategies to enhance Si-based photoelectrode performance include regulating surface morphology, engineering band structure, and modifying protection layers. Issues of Si-based photoelectrode materials for future research are also highlighted in this review.

Pulsed Laser Phosphorus Doping and Nanocomposite Catalysts Deposition in Forming a-MoSx/NP-Mo//n+p-Si Photocathodes for Efficient Solar Hydrogen Production

Vyacheslav Fominski et al.

Summary: Pulsed laser deposition of nanostructured molybdenum sulfide films improves their electrocatalytic properties in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The formation of Mo nanoparticles during laser ablation synergistically enhances the catalytic performance of amorphous a-MoSx (2 <= x <= 3) matrix. This study investigates the potential of using a-MoSx/NP-Mo films (4 and 20 nm thickness) with a p-Si cathode for photo-stimulated hydrogen production. The results show that a-MoSx/NP-Mo//n(+)p-Si photocathode achieves photo-HER according to a Z-scheme, with a stable interfacial SiOy(P) nanolayer and high long-term durability.

Interfacial charge redistribution in interconnected network of Ni2P-Co2P boosting electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution in both acidic and alkaline conditions

Qi Cao et al.

Summary: The binder-free Ni2P-Co2P/CC electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding HER activity in alkaline and acidic conditions, attributed to abundant interfacial contact, regulated electronic structure, hydrophilic surface, and interfacial charge redistribution contributing more high-valence Ni active sites. This work demonstrates the potential of facile strategy for the design and preparation of highly efficient phosphide electrocatalysts.
