Mechanical characterization of boron carbide single crystals

Arezoo Zare et al.

Summary: The study investigated the out-of-plane anisotropy in the mechanical response of boron carbide single crystals, finding significant differences in indentation modulus and hardness among different crystal orientations. It also examined the influence of in-plane anisotropy on indentations, and observed deformation behavior through pop-in events. The research provided insights into the failure mechanism of boron carbide, highlighting the potential role of crystal slip in quasi-plasticity and formation of amorphous bands leading to cracking and fragmentation.

Summary: Nanocrystalline beta-SiC bulks with hardness exceeding the superhard threshold of 40 GPa are successfully fabricated through high-pressure and high-temperature sintering of nanoparticles. This achievement represents an important progress in superhard materials research and opens up possibilities for nanostructuring in other hard materials.

Stress-induced amorphization triggers deformation in the lithospheric mantle

Vahid Samae et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of olivine-rich rocks are crucial for understanding the mechanical coupling between Earth's lithosphere and asthenosphere. Additional deformation mechanisms are required in olivine due to the lack of slip systems, with current lack of consensus on the mechanisms of grain-boundary sliding in olivine. This proposed mechanism of grain-boundary mobility triggering plastic processes in olivine-rich rocks could be significant in high-stress deep Earth conditions.

Dislocation-mediated shear amorphization in boron carbide

Kolan Madhav Reddy et al.

Summary: The onset of shear amorphization in single-crystal boron carbide was experimentally measured through nanoindentation and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that rate-dependent loading discontinuity in nanoindentation load-displacement curves results from the formation of nanosized amorphous bands via shear amorphization. Stochastic analysis of the pop-in events revealed characteristics such as exceptionally small activation volume, slow nucleation rate, and lower activation energy, indicating that the high-pressure structural transition is activated and initiated by dislocation nucleation.

Transition between Hall-Petch and inverse Hall-Petch behavior in nanocrystalline silicon carbide

Saeed Zare Chavoshi et al.

Summary: Despite efforts in experimental and simulation studies, a transition from strengthening to softening in nanocrystalline silicon carbide ceramics was revealed with molecular dynamics simulations as grain size changes. The shear strength reaches a maximum in a certain range of grain sizes, but decreases with further reduction, exhibiting inverse Hall-Petch behavior. This transition is attributed to the increasing grain boundary regions homogenizing shear stresses and delaying shear localization, preventing failure.
