An unprecedented C80 cage that violates the isolated pentagon rule

Pengwei Yu et al.

Summary: Two Lu2O@C-80 isomers, Lu2O@C-1(31876)-C-80 and Lu2O@C-2v(5)-C-80, were successfully isolated and identified using X-ray crystallography. The unprecedented cage structure of C-1(31876)-C-80 with adjacent pentagons can undergo a two-step Stone-Wales transformation to closely connect with C-2v(5)-C-80. The C-1(31876)-C-80 cage plays a crucial role in the transformation map of oxide cluster fullerenes, filling a gap in the formation process.

A New Class of Molecular Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution: Catalytic Activity of M3N@C2n (2n=68, 78, and 80) Fullerenes

Alain R. Puente Santiago et al.

Summary: The electrocatalytic properties of some endohedral fullerenes for hydrogen evolution reactions have been predicted, with a non-IPR Sc3N@D3(6140)-C68 compound showing the best catalytic performance with high activity and stability. The fused pentagon rings in the structure are believed to be the key to its superior performance, making it a promising catalytic motif for HER.

Crystallographic Characterization of U@C2n (2n=82-86): Insights about Metal-Cage Interactions for Mono-metallofullerenes

Yang-Rong Yao et al.

Summary: The study presents crystallographic characterizations of four new U-based mono-metallofullerenes, highlighting the role of symmetrical patterns and charge transfer in determining the metal positions inside the fullerene cages. It also reveals that in fullerenes containing symmetry planes, the actinide metal ions tend to be located on the mirror plane, providing new insights into metal-cage interactions and guidelines for structural determinations.

Stabilizing a three-center single-electron metal-metal bond in a fullerene cage

Fei Jin et al.

Summary: A novel trimetallic carbide clusterfullerene based on dysprosium was synthesized for the first time, exhibiting an unusual three-center single-electron metal-metal bond in its encapsulated cluster. This electronic structure differs from that of the similar scandium-based clusterfullerene, showing no metal-metal bonding and a different charge distribution.
