Metallic nanoparticle radiosensitization: The role of Monte Carlo simulations towards progress

F. Moradi et al.

Summary: Metallic nanoparticle radiosensitization is receiving significant attention for its potential to improve radiation therapy efficiency without harming surrounding normal tissues or requiring changes to radiation setups. Monte Carlo simulations have been instrumental in evaluating the physical effects during radioenhancement processes, leading to a better understanding of the underlying chemical and biological processes. Current challenges and future potentials of MC simulations in this field are also discussed.

DNA Dosimetry with Gold Nanoparticle Irradiated by Proton Beams: A Monte Carlo Study on Dose Enhancement

Ngoc Han Huynh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of cancer cell killing by gold nanoparticles in proton radiation, showing that the dose enhancement ratio increases with smaller nanoparticle size, shorter distance to DNA, and lower proton beam energy. The maximum dose enhancement ratio (1.83) was achieved with a 25 nm-radius gold nanoparticle, irradiated by a 0.5 MeV proton beam and located 30 nm away from the DNA.

Gold Nanoparticle DNA Damage by Photon Beam in a Magnetic Field: A Monte Carlo Study

Mehwish Jabeen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of the magnetic field on dose enhancement in DNA when using gold nanoparticles as radiosensitizers during radiotherapy. It was found that increasing gold nanoparticle size led to increased dose enhancement factor (DER), while decreasing photon beam energy also increased DER. The presence of a magnetic field slightly increased DER, but variations in the field strength and orientation did not significantly change the DER.

Evaluation of dose enhancement with gold nanoparticles in kilovoltage radiotherapy using the new EGS geometry library in Monte Carlo simulation

Zaynah Sheeraz et al.

Summary: The study compared the dose enhancement predicted by the newly developed particle method and the gold-water mixture method in Monte Carlo simulation for kilovoltage gold nanoparticle-enhanced radiotherapy. Results showed that both methods yielded similar dose enhancement ratios within the uncertainty range for nanoparticle concentrations ranging from 3-40 mg/mL.

Recent progress and applications of gold nanotechnology in medical biophysics using artificial intelligence and mathematical modeling

Julia A. Moore et al.

Summary: This topical review examines the application of AI and mathematical modeling in medical biophysics, specifically focusing on their interactions with gold nanotechnology. Research indicates that the size, shape, and functionality of gold nanoparticles affect their synthetic properties, and optimal wavelength selection can enhance light absorbency. The manipulation of nanoparticles through AI and models can maximize treatment efficacy in precision cancer therapy.
